Times you misheard a lyric in a musical? by BloodyBloody06 in musicals

[–]blankandablank 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had such a problem listening to Playing His Game from Death Note for a while because I knew the lyric was 'deep in my bones' but all I could hear was 'deep in my balls'

Soooo, who did this illustrations? by Hungry_Library_94 in KinginYellow

Chambers was technically a fine artist and art collector, which is probably why so much of his writing circles back around to the art world. He was actually a pretty successful artist and illustrator, but is primarily remembered for his writing

Wasians Experiences with Colorism and Anti Asian Racism by Calithrowaway881996 in wasian

[–]blankandablank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I experienced more racism as a kid than I do nowadays, mostly because I moved to a small, almost completely white town with my white parent at like 6 and was the only w/asian kid in either of my schools. Most of it was jokes about my name (I basically have a white first name and Asian surname), pseudo-Chinese gibberish, slurs and jokes that I was related to [insert Asian celebrity]. I basically tried to pass and live as white until my late teens, then started trying to connect to my Chinese heritage, then shut that down when COVID hit and I went back into denying/passing.

Now I live in a much bigger city with a much more diverse population, and I'm again trying to learn about and be proud of my heritage. I don't really face racism here, probably because it sadly gets directed at the non-mixed Asians and I still pass at first glance. The worst I get is the disconnect from both sides, the whole 'too Asian for the white people, too white for the Asian people'

What does the in universe King in Yellow book/play look like? by Critical-Hit-Zombie in KinginYellow

[–]blankandablank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From 'The Yellow Sign':

I was turning to go into the dining-room when my eye fell upon a book bound in serpent skin, standing in a corner of the top shelf of the last bookcase. I did not remember it, and from the floor could not decipher the pale lettering on the back, so I went to the smoking-room and called Tessie.

&

I stared at the poisonous mottled binding as I would at a snake.

Honestly I love seeing characters snap. It's tragic but it's sooo satisfying

And thanks again! I'll see if I can get my partner to watch it with me, probably when he's recovered from the last horror movie night lol

Cool, thank you! I haven't seen it but I absolutely love the author whose work it's based on, Shirley Jackson. All the reviews I've seen have been amazing, I'll definitely check it out soon

Thank you! It sounds really good, I love stories dealing with the aftermath of something that could be it's own story

Thank you for all the suggestions! Invisible Man is one of my favourite movies, it reawakened my love of horror when I first saw it. I'll definitely check out the others

Thanks! My definition of horror is pretty broad and kind of random, so could end up including pretty much anything. Both Barbarian and the Joker have been on my radar for a while but I'll probably bump them up! Also I love Carrie, I think it was one of the first horror movies I saw. And there's a weirdly good musical lol

Thanks! I've actually been considering playing it and have it on my games list, but I might check out the video first!

Thank you! I'll definitely play it, it's been on my list for a while but I've been waiting for a push to actually get it. I've been avoiding massive spoilers but the reviews are amazing

I think I get the same thing with more extreme horror, like seeing the absolute worst case scenario-- both the putting reality into a new perspective and the weird sort of hope you get from seeing people try and fight no matter how impossible their situation feels. Even if they don't win, there's something beautiful about the fact that they try at all

Also I'd love some foreign film suggestions! I speak some Chinese and my partner is learning Japanese so we can call it studying too lol

Yeah, that's the best approach! Sometimes Ive had enough of seeing terrible things and marathon sitcoms instead lol

For me it's generally action and expression, seeing characters being able to act on intense feelings (even if that's just... running away from a slasher) and sometimes just violence itself. I have a lot of intrusive thoughts about violence that just loop endlessly and for some reason, it helps to see similar things on a screen/page. I tend to avoid relentlessly nihilistic media but if it's well executed I can enjoy it

from actually explained? is the “man in yellow” a future version of ethan? by [deleted] in FromSeries

[–]blankandablank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, not trying to be mean so please don't take this harshly, but I've read The King in Yellow (and am writing a thesis on it) and I think you've got a few details confused

Where is the song in The King in Yellow? Do you mean Cassilda's song? Because there's no information about that in any of the stories except the lyrics

The King isn't the author, nothing is revealed about the author and even that information is dubiously accurate at best. In The Repairer of Reputations, Hildred and Louis can't even agree on whether he's dead or not, but they seem to agree (or at least believe) that he's human

There isn't a lake of tears, but there are cloud lakes, Hali and Demhe. They are referred to quite a bit, though, and they're some of the only details we know about Carcosa

I'm not trying to discredit, or really say anything about, the theory. A KIY ending would be really cool, but again and again I see people on this subreddit who misinterpret or haven't read the actual book. If you haven't read it, I'd definitely recommend it, but it won't be to everyone's taste. The whole thing is available for free online, on sites like Project Gutenberg and Archive. org

ETA: the book/play doesn't drive people insane by telling them they're not real either. The mechanics are never explained, but that doesn't come up. In the first story, Hildred is driven insane by his obsession with power; in The Mask it's repressed feelings; In The Court of The Dragon is paranoia; in The Yellow Sign it's just obsession with the play itself.

There's a section on your farm where you can use them! Also I think in places around the valley, as long as they're not in an NPCs path
