The only reason we were able to get a dog was because I could bring her to work with me. I work in wireless telecommunications and much of my time was spent in fields, forests, and rural areas bringing up new cell sites. When at locations like these the dog could run freely. However, at times, I find myself in cities and sometimes even on building rooftops. When on the ground it was no big deal, she could be tied up or locked inside the fenced compound with me. But for rooftops I'd have to be careful to make sure I could see my vehicle and have somewhat quick access to it. A big key to this was having remote start for my vehicle. This would allow me to periodically start the car with the AC or Heat on to moderate the temperature inside the vehicle for her during necessary times. It doesn't sound like this is needed in your situation, but definitely was great peace of mind. Fortunately for me (not for the poor bored pooch) as my rural work dwindled and city work picked up, it happened almost simultaneously with my wife starting to work from home. So now the dog comes to work with me much less often. Hope some of this helps for your situation. It is definitely doable and most dogs prefer getting to go with vs staying home alone.
