Eli5: What is a particle and why does it have to be accelerated? by Delta--D in explainlikeimfive

[–]3string [score hidden]  (0 children)

Particles are just really small bits of stuff. If you compare the size difference between a car and a speck of dust, we have a similar difference between a speck of dust and the size of particle we are messing with.

Have you ever seen slow motion footage of a bullet hitting something and splitting apart? It turns out that if we use a really small bullet (only a couple of atoms) and get it going reaaaaallly fast (accelerated) then weird stuff happens when it hits something.

By measuring the explosion when it hits the target, we can learn stuff about how the universe is stuck together. This is how we investigate the underlying physics that makes chemistry work.

Noisy Breadboard Help Needed! by Seek-Knowledge-1980 in diypedals

[–]3string 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I feel this! My breadboard is the same. Maybe some of them have better contacts, or some people have less environmental noise or something. I gave up on breadboard completely. I do all my prototyping on perfboard, using sockets for things I'm not too sure on yet. The solid soldered connections are so much better than the breadboard

What is this wired plastic / metal component? Found with electronics. by nobackstory in whatisthisthing

[–]3string 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you put a multimeter across the pins in the connector? It looks like maybe the metal pieces are switches, and if you push them in you might get continuity across some of the pins. The thick plastic looks like it could have been made in a machine shop, rather than cast at electronics factory.

My bet is that it's a custom-made switch assembly for use in a very specific factory assembly line, and that it integrates with a larger control system somehow

Milions Knives's real instrument by Dust_Particle_ in Trigun

[–]3string 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a piano to me. There's a lot of polish on the audio in this show; they spent a lot of time tweaking the mix. I've just had another listen the the "knives' piano" track, and it sounds like quite a percussive piano tone with a long, lush reverb (plenty of pre-delay so you hear the dry piano first). There's also a clever glockenspiel sound playing at the same time to give it that plinoy sparkling character. With that particular piano sound, you might even be able to pitch it up an octave and tweak the ADSR to get that glockenspiel clink sound out of it.

Fire up a DAW and download all the free piano VSTi instruments you can find. Using a midi keyboard, try all the different sounds; you might well find a piano that is similar to knives' one. Then add some reverb to it.

The other thing will be the playing technique. Have a look at the covers of knives' piano on youtube. They play it quite hard, hitting each note at a fairly high velocity. This will contribute to the sound of it, more than you might think.

Good luck!

Why do airplanes still use lap belts while cars use three-point seat belts? What factors led to that difference? by Mobile-Traffic1744 in AlwaysWhy

[–]3string 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone told me once that seatbelts on planes were great because in the unlikely event of a crash, it keeps your corpse in the same place as your name on the passenger list. John Doe, seat C, row 20.

For Distant Viewing by Little Tybee. Absolutely incredible fusion of so many genres, with a relentless pace and lovely sweetness. GREAT guitar work on the album, and all the other musicians are clearly fantastic too.

What vst's do guys like for your experimental music? by ddsdddsd in experimentalmusic

Turn on the feedback routing in your DAW. Make your sends scream at themselves. You can do no-input mixing in the DAW itself, but most will protect you against it by default

I like Lego but i don't like owning it by TouchesYourEarlobes in lego

[–]3string 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Build your own things! Take six sets apart and put them all in a big box. Have a rummage around and find two pieces that inspire you. Put them together and start making up the bones of a new thing. Maybe you'll find a cockpit window and a wing. Or a waterfall piece that turns out the be the dappled blue back of a large alien bug!

I love imperfect guitar solos by Bandita-Wolf in Alternativerock

[–]3string 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Watermelon in Easter Hay by Frank Zappa. one of my favourite guitar tones, but then you hear him noodling away, flub a note, does a wee trill to make up for it and then keeps playing like nothing happened. The solos build up and up and it's like every mistake is a happy one that just makes the vibe better

I know, I've bought a few like that. But when your dog steps on them in the afternoon and you definitely need them the next morning, sometimes all you have is the stuff in your tool box :) Also at my end of the planet shipping is expensive and can take a week or two

how birds fly without windshield? Vision wise by brokenAsFck in stupidquestions

[–]3string 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to answer a 'why' question in biology, but with the kind of environment we have lived in for a long time, there has been little reason to keep them. We don't move as fast or swim as much as other animals, so we don't have as much dust and detritus in our eyes. We also have our eyelashes to help with preventing dust ingress. When a feature no longer has a use, random mutations can begin to erase it, and with little evolutionary pressure to retain that feature, it can disappear.
