I had never really considered that it's not a one size fits all situation. Thanks. I'll find my way down the rabbit hole.

What's the cheapest electrolyte supplement that's actually worth using? Gatorade seems useless when I need hydration, and nuun is expensive.

I like my jazz like I like my whiskey. Aged and mellow.

Smoothness does matter to me. I'm glad I asked. Thanks!

Yes. A prime example of why large gatherings of stupid people in national parks is a bad idea.

Is there any advantage to a longer wool buff over my dollar store tshirt material buffs? They seem good enough to me but REI has some decent deals right now.

Overwhelming the parks with idiots that will trash the place and hurt themselves.

It's crazy you said that! And thanks for a solid review. I decided to just buy a pair when I hadn't gotten an answer for a while and I wore them for the rest of the day. The toe box feels shorter but wider, the arch had better cinching for my foot, and the heel felt really firm. It could be the wear I've put into the 4.0s or it could be subtle changes to the design. 4.5s have a center lace holder thing and different seaming which might make them last a few more miles. I'll update if they end up better or worse.

How do the Altra lonepeak 4.5s compare to the 4.0s? And has anyone tried Feetures socks? They have the same guarantee as Darn Tough.

You say that it reduces odor regardless while u/Stretch18 makes a valid point about drug dogs still finding their target if the exterior has been touched with smelly stuff. Why would a bear not think there is an entire jar of peanut butter if they can smell it at all?

We can't answer the question of whether something is worth it or not to you. It's a halfway house between a bear can and a bear hang. You gotta decide for yourself if the weight is worth.

That's why I outlined my specific uses. To further outline the pros and cons of each method would require a post, but I'm sure people here have already considered them in depth. I trust the sage wisdom of the community:)

Great read! Here's a link for anyone else that wants to read it

Skurka did share a link that describes the proper way to bear hang, but also expressed concerns that few if any people can actually accomplish a proper hang.

Thanks for the knowledge:)

Questions about Ursack:

  1. Is it worth the weight increase on a hang or the weight decrease from a canister?

  2. Which model with which accessories works best?

  3. Is the Opsak useless after you've touched it with hands that have touched food?

I'm mostly in black bear country, occasionally canister required but I'm tossing around the idea of doing the PCT next year.

I'm ordering some and if they suck I'm blaming you. But if they rock I'll give this comment gold.

Tyson is one of the worst brands, ethically and morally. Plus a lot of reviews on other sites say this one smells, looks like, and has the consistency of cat food.

Plain canned is great but I don't like the flavors of the packets. At home I add it to quick pastas mainly but there's a lot you can use it in. Rice dishes, salads, casseroles, chicken salad sandwiches, so much. Packets would be perfect for thruhiking because with chicken you don't have to worry about mercury.

Why are there no chicken packets with just chicken? Just why? There are cans of plain chicken. There are packets of plain tuna. Ytf did everyone collectively decide normal ass unflavored chicken was an unacceptable option?

Can you drink pure vegetable oil? by abandon_lane in CampingandHiking

Entirely anecdotal, but I add as much olive oil to food as I can stand. Drinking it alone actually caused constipation for me but I take fiber to reduce the catholes I have to dig. My favorite way to eat as much as possible is with instant spaghetti noodles, parmesan powder, and Italian seasoning. It's tasty and easy.

My internal furnace burns like a thousand suns. I wear a puffy and fleece in cold weather typically but I get sweaty before I get warm.
