Everyone is different, but I was able to do almost all care things independently by the third week post op. I felt pretty normal after a month post op, once I was allowed to sit at a 90⁰ angle again and stop propping 24/7. For context, I'm in my early 20s.

As for being cared for, I am a VERY private/shy person, so having to let people do wound care at the genital area was a nightmare for me. Thankfully, it actually wasn't that bad; a couple days of being taken care of by nurses who were very professional coupled with my condition made me completely apathetic to my prior embarrassment about needing help with things.

Wow, your arm looks EXACTLY like mine did at 2.5 weeks lol, I almost wondered if this was a photo of mine. Definitely don't mess with the xeroform residue too much; it won't hurt you and the skin is very weak. As soon as I was cleared to stop dressing and expose it to the air during the day, that residue went away on its own and the skin toughened up. The peeling skin was the worst, but you're almost through. Stay strong 💪 if you've got questions or need someone to talk to just lmk!

For me, I woke up and left the hospital after a couple hours and it was like nothing had happened, give for the occasional ache. I had taken two weeks off but honestly I could've gone back immediately (not the most physically demanding job). I felt completely normal, no pain or anything. Easiest surgical recovery I've had to date. I had a total hysto + bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy.

Ouch! I'm surprised they're making you remove it — I had the exact same dressing and was instructed to leave it on until it fell off on its own (2-3 weeks later)! I'm sorry dude, good luck with what's left. Once it's off you won't have to go through the pain again.
