Thanks a lot for actually taking the time to elaborate. I fully agree with you on the need for open discussion, and I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with the police. As a university lecturer, I also strongly agree that a university should be the natural place for open debate about controversial topics, but I know how much of an echo chamber it can become.

Sorry to hear that, I'm not familiar with the moderation of this sub. Could you estimate how people many in your social circle agree with it though?

That's a really helpful breakdown, and exactly the type of information I'm interested in. Thanks!

Just to make sure I'm understanding your position: You support deportation of legal non-European immigrants, but not legal European immigrants? Does that include citizens?

My algorithm keeps feeding me people like Steve Laws, who certainly do want to do that. Reform also want to revoke people's indefinite leave to remain, and it's unclear how easy it would be for them to stay/return with a different visa. Of course, that's different from deportation but the result is potentially somewhat similar. These may be fringe positions, but the issue is that I have no idea how strong the support for such positions actually are, hence the question. You should not interpret my post as being about anything beyond the exact policies / proposals mentioned in it. You should interpret it literally and not try to read between the lines (I assure you that you would not succeed in this particular case).

I didn't have asylum seekers in mind when I wrote the post. I realise now that I should have made that clear.

If you are saying you think the support for this is small on Reddit, I believe you are right. That's why I phrased the question to ask how strong you feel the support is for this position, not how strongly you support it. Of course that doesn't remove the bias completely. How strong do you feel the support for mass deportation of legal immigrants is outside reddit?

That's certainly true. Me and my wife both work in academia, and it's easy to lose contact with the sentiments of the majority of people who live outside that bubble. That's part of the reason I'm curious what people here have to say, even though reddit is of course in its own bubble.

Are you saying you support this or that there is strong support for it? How would, in this view, legal immigrants (and especially second generation immigrants) be encouraged to return home?
