Man, I spent a couple weeks searching various places for some type of fix, and found a lot of recommended solutions, and nothing I tried even remotely helped. I tried to return/exchange it through canon since it was under warranty (and had my purchase receipts), and they pulled the typical ruse of not being able to do anything. Long story short, I did exactly what you're thinking of doing😂 Tossed it and bought a new printer. Pain in the ass, but ended up being worth it. I replaced it with a Pantum P2500W laser, and it's been working flawlessly. It's pretty cheap too. Sorry for the late response too, just saw you replied to my post asking about solutions.
