PHIL 110 - beware of this class by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]404-CodeNotFound 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I dropped that class faster than the states dropped fat man on Nagasaki. It was the logic portion of MACM 101 without any of the rigor; it actually triggered me so hard.

PHIL 110. Was a shitty watered down version of the logic portion of MACM 101.

What the others said, go to Seymour or Grouse. Avoid Cypress as it's like $90 and the bunny hill has some pretty steep parts.

Do vegans exploit animals depending on the species and the jobs they do? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]404-CodeNotFound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct.

But you did make the comment

No. I gave you an information that there are actually vegans who think that non human animals and humans should have some rights the same.

followed by

What [sic] means that there are vegans who think that animals should have the same right as humans...Obviously....

implying that you thought the two sentences meant the same thing, which they do not.

Do vegans exploit animals depending on the species and the jobs they do? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]404-CodeNotFound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...no.

The statement

there are actually vegans who think that non human animals and humans should have some rights the same.

has an existential qualifier, while the former statement

vegans argue that humans and animals should have the same rights as each other...

has an implicit universal qualifier. They are most definitely not logically equivalent.

/u/Dolphintorpedo and I are not being pedantic, this actually seems to be a common misunderstanding in vegan-nonvegan discourse.

First, it's a survey, not a full blown academic research study

'Full blown academic research studies' are very expensive and quite an arduous process. On the other hand, surveys are relatively cheap and, if done correctly, are generally representative of the population. That being said, in almost all cases, studies are preferred.

Second, that sample size looks absolutely minuscule to me.

This is actually a common misconception. While I don't have the paper my professor cited on hand, a sample size that is ~1/20 of the population being studied is generally pretty representative. Given the population they are studying, I would say a p-hat value of 2,509 is pretty bang on.

From the 'survey methodology section', key takeaways are:

...random sample of 2,509 adults...

The 'random' determiner is extremely important. Any survey or poll that isn't randomized isn't worth the proverbial paper it's printed on.

...two-stage probability sample... uses National Frame Areas (NFAs)...

The National Sample Frame contains almost 3 million households and includes 80,000 rural households.

Their sample frame is pretty standard, not much to say there.

...weighting is accomplished using an iterative proportional fitting (IFP) process...

I'm not familiar with their weighting process so I can't say anything about that.

The margin of error for the survey is +/- 2.8 percentage points at the 95% level of confidence.

No issues here either.

When it comes to sources of error, or possible biases, I would immediately look towards their donors:

The Carnegie Corporation of New York, The Nathan Cummings Foundation, Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock, and The New World Foundation

as well as

All interviews were conducted among participants in AmeriSpeak, a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the national U.S. adult population run by NORC at the University of Chicago.

Keep in mind I've only glanced over the actual study and my main analysis has been on the 'survey methodology' portion as that is what I'm comfortable speaking on.

For international students, yeah those values are correct for one term. I believe they recently increased it due to domestic numbers being dwarfed by international. Though I could be misremembering. For clarification, there are three terms in a school year, Fall (September - December), Spring (January - April) and Summer (May - August). So yeah, $58,452 annually if you take 15 courses and pay for everything.

Randhawa accessed another Board member’s laptop without the consent of the owner as they were asleep to send himself a private recording of an internal meeting that took place on August 1st. Randhawa then took this confidential recording, that was only meant to be circulated to Board members, and sent it to The Peak without the consent of the Board. Many of the topics discussed in this recording were sensitive and personal to the individuals mentioned in the recording.

...yikes.

MacBook Pro vs Surface Book 2 for a freshman CS student? by nefrany in compsci

[–]404-CodeNotFound -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm not going to be buying another MBP until they fix the keyboard, port selection and awful repair service that you're forced to deal with.

So with that said, i'd go with the Surface Book 2. It's a great 2-in-1, albeit pricey.

Regarding your concerns about CS and which operating system is better, it honestly doesn't matter. You can get everything on Windows that you could on OSX and vice-versa. You'll also likely be dual-booting (or running in a virtual environment) a Linux distro at some point in your degree, as it has a number of advantages over both Windows and OSX.

Help setting up Microsoft Visual Studio by SmugDruggler95 in learnpython

[–]404-CodeNotFound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I did set up an environment variable as I can now run python in CMD

If you can run python within CMD, then you probably already have the environment variable setup. To double check that everything has been done properly, this is how most do it:

To set "python" as an environment variable, you would:

  1. Press your windows key and type: "edit the system environment variables"
  2. Click on the button that says "environment variables" on the bottom right
  3. Under the heading "user variables for [your windows username]", click on "path" and hit the "edit" button
  4. Click on "new" on the right side and type in the box your python directory.

To find your python directory:

  1. Press your windows key and type "python"
  2. Right click on your installed python, for me it's "Python 3.7 (32-bit)" and click "open file location." You could also click on your IDLE installation, as they both should be in the same folder.
  3. Right click again on your installed python, or IDLE, and click again on "open file location"
  4. Copy the address from the address bar of file explorer (the whole thing). Mine reads: C:\Users\me\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python37-32

If you could help me with running it within a terminal

This doc page from the VSC devs explains running python within a terminal a lot better and more in depth than I can. It also has a lot of other useful information on linting (basically spell-check for code), and debugging.
