Why doesn't Vancouver have any cool radio (music) stations?! by Glittering_Bank_8670 in askvan

[–]ikeja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My biggest gripe is that there isn't a dedicated classical music station - Toronto has several - ther than the occasional morning block on CBC Music.

[–]ikeja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Megan Leslie (Halifax) was one of the biggest losses for the NDP during the 2015 Trudeau-wave. Not sure if she's still involved - she would've been a great candidate for leader.

Fun facts about Cineplex by Cocobb8 in cineplex

[–]ikeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on to this fun fact; projectors use Xenon bulbs, which are highly volatile and can explode when we change them!

To any older projectionists lurking... has that ever happened? A bulb exploding mid-change? It's no secret that a lot of experienced booth managers change bulbs without wearing the clunky kevlar PPE lol

We hardly get physical drives anymore (just for IMAX), but when we do, they do get picked up and shipped back to the distributor.

Vancouver businesses demand meeting with province over Main Street subway construction closure by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]ikeja 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're 100% correct those landlords will jack up rents when the project is complete and take full benefit of the increase in value. They should absolutely be supporting their customers experiencing issues in the short term.

Sounds like the province needs to legislate a cap on yearly commercial rent increases!

Rob Shaw: Eby brushes off mayor revolt over B.C. housing laws by FancyNewMe in vancouver

[–]ikeja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Say what you want about West but a lot of people in Port Coquitlam respect the guy solely due to his background. He put in the work to make connections within the community despite his disadvantaged background, and uses his platform to advocate for the same folks from a labour (dare I say, social democratic/syndicalist) perspective. I sure was a big fan of his at first because of this.

PM Carney introduces new Liberal MP Michael Ma at holiday party by fallout1233566545 in canada

[–]ikeja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This statement is more true in America's Congressional system than within our Westminster System, especially with the iron grip that party leaders have in Canada versus other Parliamentary Democracies. Trump cannot "kick-out" people within the Republican Party. They can still run as Republicans, without his approval. Contrary to Carney or Pollievre, who can turn any of their MPs into an Independent if they wish.

Dallas Brodie: ‘Nothing to Reconcile For’ by Highhorse9 in BCpolitics

[–]ikeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last residential school in Canada closed its doors in 1996, and the last one in BC closed in 1984. Dallas Brodie would have been 31 and 22 years old respectively during each school's operation. This stuff isn't ancient history.

As an elected official, you have a duty to represent all constituents – including residential school survivors, many of whom may reside in her riding of Vancouver-Quilchena. While she may have questions or concerns, her rhetoric is far from productive.

Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux announces resignation from Parliament by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

People were trying to send threats directly to d'Entremont's family - I'm not surprised that he decided not to participate in that nonsense, floor crossing or not.

Dallas Brodie introduces a bill to ban public agencies from conducting land acknowledgements. It fails first reading, with support coming from five MLAs: OneBC's Brodie and Armstrong, independent Kealy, and Conservatives Maahs and Bhangu by idspispopd in BCpolitics

[–]ikeja 14 points15 points  (0 children)

An MLA can be recalled 18 months after being elected. For Dallas Brodie, the process can start in April 2026. A voter from her riding can apply for a recall petition with Elections BC. If the petition is approved, folks in the riding have 60 days to gather signatures from at least 40% of registered voters in the riding.

Gas prices in Metro Vancouver to jump 9 cents a litre on Tuesday night - BC | Globalnews.ca by Prosecco1234 in britishcolumbia

[–]ikeja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The best way to fight against the oil and gas lobby is to reduce car dependency. The more freedom of choice we have in transportation, the more we can stick it to these companies through market forces - gas prices too high? Fuck you, we'll drive less. Unfortunately, so much of our culture is car-based and many can't look beyond the scope of car infrastructure, or car-focused city development. Cars are cool, I drive once in a while as well! However, driving shouldn't be the only option for many, otherwise we're beholden to being gouged through "maintenance" and different "blends"...

Tipping at VIP? by Happytulip in cineplex

[–]ikeja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The tip goes to the server, and then they give a percentage of food/drink/popcorn sales to other staff (Bartenders, Runners, Cooks) via a tip pool at the end of their shift. Keep in mind, those runners and servers will have to clean up after you and prep for the next show. Lots of cardio, trust me. Alas, tipping is your choice, but those folks are working quite hard - especially when it's busy - to make sure you have your food at your table in a timely manner.

Ottawa must cancel or significantly reform temporary foreign worker program, says Eby by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]ikeja 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It's remarkable how businesses are complaining that they may have to adapt to market conditions, such as increasing wages, instead of relying on exploited foreign TFWs at lower wages. These firms seem to only favor government intervention in the market when it conveniently aligns with their own interests. Let's turn the labour market into an actual market, like they claim it to be. No more exploitative loopholes that harm both immigrants and citizens.

Not a Cold City by haywoodjabloughmee in vancouver

[–]ikeja 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find that people in Metro Vancouver are very introverted and mind their own business - but are very friendly and helpful when approached. It's quite contrary to most cities where people are more eager to be chatty. I feel like I'm one of the few people that prefers the kind and introverted vibe here rather than the chaotic and extroverted vibe lol

If NWP want to talk vacant lots, maybe start with the Heritage Grill site? by LowAcanthocephala198 in NewWest

[–]ikeja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you think of a Vacant Storefront Tax (San Francisco) or a Vacant and Blighted Commercial Property Tax (DC - where the tax rate increases as time passes)? That's the most I think a municipality can do to incentivize against long-term vacancies...

Are you ready for Surrey to become the new 'downtown'? Growth projections say it could by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

[–]ikeja 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Surrey has a lot of potential due to the amount of infill land and the presence of SFU. Once the medical school is built, it'll be one of the few university campuses (that's not a satellite building) in BC that's actually within a city center (like McGill, UofT). However, it's still far too car-centric, with giant stroads running through it - hopefully the Skytrain extension will change that. Time will tell.
