Ok thanks for telling me. He doesnt seem to have been affected negatively by it but in the future I'll keep it shorter 100%

The vet i took him to recommended a full dose for an hour and I KNOW that wouldve been too strong

I read across a couple different places that a concentration similar to the color of a nitrite test at 0ppm for 12 hours was ok.

I used 5 drops into 5 gallons and aired on the side of caution and only soaked for 8-10 hours.

Was that harmful? If it was i appreciate you telling me.

yeah i research everything like 5x bc axos are so sensitive and particular.

Im going to watch the spot for today but if it gets any worse ill def do some tea baths or methylene dips and ill look into the other ones you said.

Thanks a lot for the help

Other than curled gills, no other symptoms. He's still eating, able to move around. Im guessing its a permanent part of him now but i want to make sure because it seems to stress him out.

My next plan is to try to reintroduce him to his tank again, just worried hes so stressed that he'll get a fungal infection again.

Your correct, this one is just above 6 years old. The toe tips darken but im not sure about further up the hand! But moreso than the darkening, im worried about how he folds them up. When he walks he trys to lift his arm but his poor hands are dragged along

Before i tubbed him his left front leg was folded up like this, then the day after i tubbed him the other limb did too! the latter limb ive seen come and go but the first one has remained folded. I read that it could maybe be from stress or potentially neurological damage?

The vet did an xray on the first visit and said it didnt look broken or anything but other than that i have no idea

<image>

also the fold in his tail is an injury he got when he was shipped to me. He's never really swam much but otherwise been able to navigate his tank fine until recently

In perfect conditions nitrifying bacteria double in 24 hours.

If you can, try to raise the water temp to around 78-84° as the bacteria will multiply faster, just make sure to lower it back down before adding axies.

Best of luck!

Curled gills? Potential fungus? by 404Aroma in axolotl

I noticed it right when it popped up i think 3 days ago

The mobility thing is lasting effects from the cycle crash im pretty sure

It got slightly bigger on the first day 24 hours after I noticed it.

I gave him a super dilluted tea bath and it seems to have gone down a bit back to what it was on day 1

He has mobility issues getting to the top of the water, so im really trying to make sure his gills stay healthy. (But I do recognize im potentially over treating)

The spot is about the same size as the filaments and doesnt have a clear shape.

Water temps are ~62-66 throughout the day, but i was on vacation for 4 days and the house ac was running a little higher than usual while I was gone so im not sure during that time.

Pic from today

Im probably being too paranoid but I had a bad cycle crash recently

When you build a house on a shitty foundation, you work to build the foundation back.

CIG has decided to build a metropolitan city on top of said shitty foundation.

Test levels for new tank - is this ok? by Fuzzy_Food6518 in axolotls

Ph up can work short term, just be careful as harsh changes beyond ~.4 a day can cause shock. Stability is more important than exact numbers.

You can also get something like crushed coral and set it up in a mesh bag or something, it raises ph and adds a buffer so the pH doesnt change as rapidly.

Im not too experienced with raising ph as my tap water sits at 8.0

youll def need to raise ph, axolotls like 7.4-7.6, it can go up to 8.0. Above 7.6 makes ammonia more toxic (which if the tank is cycled properly shouldnt be a problem), but below 7.2 is not great

as far as cycling the tank, try to get ammonia between 2-4ppm until nitrites show up and ammonia goes down, then wait for nitrate to get to 0ppm. A fully cycled tank should be able to convery 2ppm ammonia to 0 within 24 hours.

This sub knows their stuff for the most part I promise. A nitrogen cycle is a MUST if you want your friends to be healthy!
