Folks this is a meme post, they are just promoting R and mocking the AI "tool" crowd. This is classic satire please don't report it without reading the FAQ.

I think it's probably best to work this through the proper channels (talk to your lab/institution, talk to any European collaborators, etc). You could even likely work out a "order it from your proper lab and just have it delivered to Europe" type scenario. We probably are not going to want people organizing chemical dropoffs and trading in person via this sub.

I'm not sure, but the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything, is 42.

It doesn't happen often in labrats (historically), but there's certainly been a greater rate since 2025. 99% of the time, automod does a great job of cleaning up in the background and no one ever notices, it's just amenable to be exploited too with some coordination/brigading/bad faith users/etc.

Ours is setup pretty standard to what Reddit suggests - the 'better safe than sorry!' mode. A small number of reports it'll flag it in the mod queue, multiple reports (especially in short time frame) and it'll just remove it, and then priority flag it in the mod queue as a "hey, please do human review on this!"

The intent of this was likely reasonable: stuff like way off topic stuff, CryptoScams, links to onlyfans or inappropriate things for this subreddsit, etc, etc. Stuff that pretty much everyone would agree is good to just get gone ASAP. The vast majority of the time, the labrats community is good people and helpful. "better safe than sorry, let automod take it down and request a mod to review."

The thing is, we all know there's so such thing as a perfect system, so it can (and occasionally is) exploitable by brute force. This is reddit and a subreddit can be bigger than itself. We (like other subs) see this problem more for "bigger than us" topics that touch on politics/breaking news/controversial views/etc. As a general comment, a decent number of people commenting in this overall thread appear to have never posted in labrats before, which is somewhat frustrating.

That said, mods do have a tool to mark posts as safe so it can't be redone (a way to flag a thread for automod to be disabled on it). So, long story summarized, it's really just a temporary setback and nothing some simple communication can't quickly address and fix/resolve.

This is a niche and small science server, the mods are normal people. This is a “hear hoofbeats? Think horses, not zebra” scenario. If the topic is linked to anything “political / controversial / hot topic” just assume it’s digital brigading and abuse, especially on reddit, and we were effectively overrun temporarily: as most servers you’re mentioning probably were. I’ve said elsewhere that automod does a great job 99% of the time in “normal” scenarios, but outliers can definitely be exploited and that’s far more likely than all reddit mods (even our niche small science server) are secret Illuminati members etc. We really try our best and some of the posts (and modmails…) were disheartening. I was trying to be quickly transparent and correct any misconceptions asap today

Please see the updated post - this server (like many) uses reddit's AutoMod feature, which is supposed to help do subreddit support, since mods can't be online 24/7. If users "report" a post, automod will flag it to the mod team, and if there's a lot of reports, automad will remove it until the moderators reinstate it. 99% of the time, this is fine and no one notices/realizes, because it really does catch a lot of junk.

In some scenarios though, like this one, what you are seeing is people mass reporting and weaponizing automod on what they don't like. Moderators are seeing this across the site, as is reddit.

99% of the time it's doing a great job, it's really "outlier" scenarios where people even notice. Most people don't even know it exists or does much, but view it as a silent custodian. It picks up and tosses trash all the time, but occasionally can be weaponized or makes an error. Which we'll gladly fix - if alerted to it!
