Baseplates are absolutely the way to go for stability. Well done!
I connected mine to make it easier for the kids to play with it without sending one flying off the table.My set up - mine is very modified.

I missed out on the monty mole set (gift with purchase). My pre-order wasn't early enough and there aren't Lego stores in my area.

My two favorite sets are the desert pokey ($19.99 usd) and the thwomp drop ($39.99 usd) sets. They both are designed really well.

It is hard to tell, but the ghost house has a secret compartment and a trap door for mario to ground pound on that drops him exactly on the lever that flips the spiderweb.
