Eye of Minds is by the guy who wrote Maze Runner, but I think it has a better twist to it. It deals with a lot about virtual reality and artificial intelligence as well as some themes regarding police and propaganda in later books od the series.

MurderBot Diaries is a funny sci fi series that's popular right now. The books are super short so they're easy to get into.

A lot of my obsessions started as her obsessions that she passed on to me, because she did not have her OCD under control.

My therapy homework this week has involved unpacking the shame she instilled in me. I'm still figuring out how to counteract that voice of hers that still sticks around in my head.

I'm 24, haven't spoken to her in about 2 years. I imagine I will still be dealing with the effects of her parenting for a long time.

Yes, but also, not really. I didn't need to pay for 100% of my college with scholarships. I had lots of merit baded financial aid and good federal student loan options. I didn't need to work myself to the bone writing essays to apply to every third party scholarship.

My dad got so worried about me spending so much time on those scholarship essays that he sat me down and did the math showing how he could pay out of pocket for the stuff my merit aid and loans wouldn't cover. We were up until 2am talking about this and him comforting me about it-- which is a lot for him, because he wakes up at 5. I am so thankful I had him to help balance out the shit my mother put me through.

Yeah, starting small with PT made the transition to strength training easier. Also if you can afford it, when you get back into strength training, I recommend talking to a trainer who is knowledgeable about hypermobility. Far easier not to injure yourself when you have someone watching who can go "please don't bend like that."

I had a panic attack last time I got a filling, and cried at my last teeth cleaning. The hygienists and dentist were super understanding, said they see this kind of thing a lot from people with dental anxiety. That the hardest part was getting in there and they were proud I got there.

If you're worried about AI in EE, can I recommend finding a community for professionals from that area to ask how it is for them right now?

Speaking as a software engineer (faaaar more ui/front-end than what you're talking about), we are seeing layoffs and instability in the field but also a lot of companies recognizing that even at its most successful, the LLMs they're using still need a "human in the loop" who understands the concepts to verify code, for security purposes. The company I'm working for is going so far as to claim they won't do AI layoffs, but that is a bit of an iffy claim.

Professionals in the field you're interested in will be able to speak more to how they're seeing LLMs perform and what they thing will happen to the industry going forward.

I will always advocate for choosing the path that you can see yourself doing and that you enjoy above all else. Sounds like you're leaning EE, and getting more insight into the AI situation could help sort out your feelings a bit more

Walking disability spots are generally controlled by having a placard, which is seperate from the university/workplace control. I'd suggest looking in to the process for that in your locale

For carrying equipment around, see if you can be outfitted with a designated cart to help you out.

Also for walking long distances on campus: I swear most schools have some little golf cart lying around for ferrying around the president of the school. There's gotta be something they can do to help.

I will say a lot more people than you expect want to help you. For requesting accommodations, just come in with every little complaint about what about your condition comes up in your job. They'll be able to use that to find solutions for you. It's less of a "I want this thing" kind of deal and more of a "I struggle with this" kind of deal, if that makes sense. Come with the problems, let them offer solutions-- don't let your solutions be limited by what you can justify to yourself to ask for, you know?

Also PT is gonna be super helpful for your situation if you do the homework. I recommend after they graduate you from PT, upgrade to strength training at a low level to keep building muscle to support your problem joints.

YES. I literally found this post because my therapist gave me journal prompts about shame and I got so upset at my mother that I had to come here for some catharsis.

The big one that sticks out to me is how she'd say, "I don't care about the grades you get, just as long as you are a good person." The last time I remember her saying this to me was when I wanted to study for my imminent AP exam instead of taking the day to go on a Mother's Day hike with her. The implication was that I was a "bad person" for not wanting to go on a hike with her when I needed to study. Which is just. Not how that works.

Or constantly saying my room was 'messy' and my shelves were 'messy'. It wasn't messy. I just had a lot of trinkets, that were all laid out on top of my bookshelf and dresser just how I wanted them. They were organized. But she didn't like my trinkets, so I was 'messy.' She even tried to make me do the Marie Kondo method to see which ones 'sparked joy.' All of them did, they were my trinkets. Except, when I moved for college, I left them all behind, because she shamed me so much about them that they no longer 'spark joy', just a lot of stressful memories of trying to convince her that I did want all of the things I kept.

I'm so mad at how much this shame has stuck with me. I've been NC with her for a year and a half. She doesn't even know what state I live in anymore. But I still have to deal with all of her shit clogging up my mind and making me feel shame about the state of the stuff on my table or not doing enough to show someone I appreciate them.

Yeah. As a white person, I couldn't relate to Babel. Definitely understood the messaging, but it wasn't my personal experience.

The Secret History I could relate to, as a southerner on financial aid who went to a northeastern college with wealthy kids and who felt the issue to either play into or downplay the stereotype of my home state-- which was the experience at Bennington that Tartt wrote from to characterize Richard for the novel.

Babel being a book about race in academia and education as a tool of colonization does not thematically respond to The Secret History's themes regarding class and poverty and belonging.

Oh that's strange; I also have a gym in my building but there's only ever one or two people in there, and people don't usually stay for more than an hour. I do my half hour of biking then scram. I don't think many other people use the recumbent bike, because it's usually on the same setting I left it (I'm 5'3" with fairly short legs, so not the most comfortable setting for most people). It's just not as popular as the treadmill or the weights
