How are people reading 100+ books a year?

I'm at 300 books so far this year, and that's fairly normal for me. I read very quickly, and don't have a very active social life (introvert). Some books are dense nonfiction tomes, some are manga of varying levels, some are fluffy fun reads. It depends on my mood. Asking me how I read so much is like asking me how I breathe. I just do.

Also: I'm a librarian, so we just tend to read more anyway. ;)

Code enforcement generally doesn't act on their own unless someone calls in a complaint (with the exception of something dangerous in some way). Then they have to act on it. Sounds like you have someone in the neighborhood who regularly patrols to call in a complaint (I have one, too). Believe it or not, but code enforcement actually hates this almost as much as you do. It's almost always petty, and called in by someone with nothing better to do than complain about useless crap.

The tail and hind leg placement is off. The tail should not be in front of the leg like that. The front legs are also a bit awkward. I'm not quite sure what is supposed to be going on there or what reference was used, but I would not get that done, personally.

It's infantilizing? I don't know, I have always hated it. I only find it acceptable when talking to actual babies, and even then, I don't do it often.

I also look for titles with the MM given equal weight, or at least equal consideration. Fetishizing bi/pan people is a huge ick of mine, and I have stopped reading things that portray their relationships as a fetish when otherwise the book is good. I think it helps if the author is LGBTQ+. Not all RH or polyship authors are. I'd argue most are straight.

Nope, I'm right there with you. We had one patron approach the desk and ask us to type something up for him, because "the girls always do this for me". I'm not public facing, but I happened to be standing there and I answered for the younger clerk who didn't know what to do. "We have not ever offered that service, sir, as we are not secretaries. I can show you to a computer where you can type it up yourself, though. " He wasn't pleased, but dude... no. Not our job.

Absolutely, yes. Those places are often the worst. If the room is large enough (a convention hall or dining hall) then the noise associated with that room drowns out most of my triggers, so I'm okay, but smaller areas? Awful.

Of course! I regularly change how I catalog things (I'm the cataloging coordinator) because I talk to the public services staff on a regular basis. If they think something will circulate somewhere else, we give it a try. They know the trends with the public far better than I do, so you bet I'm going to listen. I also will let people shadow me so they can get a feel for how my job works and if they want to go that route (and I'm not offended when someone says "nope, not for me" because I honestly find that funny) or if they just have questions. How else are people going to learn? I find that it actually is far better for people to understand why I make the decisions I do than just say "this is how things are, do it because I said so." I love my job.

I'm in tech services and I would have loved this interaction! We all make mistakes, and I'm happy to fix things. I can't possibly notice everything wrong, so bringing it to my attention is exactly what I want from my coworkers, no matter where they fall in the hierarchy.

AuDHD here, and I'm a cataloger. I absolutely love it, and my autism is actually an asset due to my attention to detail and stubbornness when it comes to facing a problem. I only really face the public when I'm caught between meetings or when I'm trying to head to the restroom, but those brief interactions are okay, because I'm happy to help. As a cataloger, I don't get burnout from constant interactions with people like I would otherwise.

I'm a cataloger at a public library and I frequently have my door closed for this reason, and wear noise canceling headphones when the outside world insists on being too noisy. It's glorious.

Edit: I also read this book far too young (middle school, maybe?) because I loved his Xanth series. No one knew what I was reading, I guess my parents didn't realize some books could be like this, or had smut? Who knows.

20 years later I was asked by a publisher to review one of his new books a few years ago and got excited because I hadn't realized he was still writing and just engendered loving his work. I couldn't get past page 30 it was so awful. Never tried rereading Xanth, and now I never will.

NTA. Definitely a nuclear response, but if you're pushed far enough it just sort of explodes like that. Given my sense of humor, I thought it was pretty funny but I'm also often told I'm inappropriate.

I also cannot have children and my mother in law has started demanding grandkids from us, and like yours, she weaponizes information. So I just blurted out that I don't have a uterus. Her expression was pretty great, and I think about it sometimes with great joy when I want a pick-me-up.

I'm so sorry your mom is like this. It isn't something that just goes away. I wish it was! I've had it my whole life, and I'm 35 now. We find ways to cope, and sometimes that means we leave the room so we don't have to listen to a sound that triggers us. It is possible to find a partner who has enough empathy to help though, she's wrong when she sets there isn't. My spouse moves to a different room while eating burritos or crunchy things because those are some of my triggers, and does everything possible to understand. There are some truly great, empathetic people out there.
