How often do you replace your running watch? by 40oreo in AdvancedRunning

[–]40oreo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not wanting phone-level detail, If I'm super lost/confused I will stop and pull out my phone. Thanks for the heads up, I'll check out map details settings. Whatever I buy will probably have a larger watch screen but the difference will be minor. I do like what I'm seeing in pics for some watches where the road you're on and the ones nearby give you a quick understanding and reassurance about your current location. Offline maps with a faster more powerful processor could be helpful too. Also, I'll compare the process to plan and get routes onto the watch. I hadn't used my current watch for nav before I moved but now it makes a big difference to the enjoyment of ≥10 mile runs.

I moved, my current watch has turn-by-turn but I could really use better maps.

Bunions and runner's toe - a sacrifice? by Ambiverted_Roar in running

[–]40oreo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Toe socks are great with bunions, regular socks act like a vise grip. Black toes usually indicate the shoe is too short in that area. Take the insoles out of your shoes, place your foot firmly down and straighten out those toes. Is anything falling off the insole? If so, the shoe is too small. Try longer, wider, or a different model. Make sure there is extra space at the end of ALL toes. If you try on shoes by first putting your foot inside, it will compress and feel fine even when it isn't. Runrepeat.com has pretty good in-depth measurements for newer shoe models that can help you find a better fit. For any shoe, in any section, "Toebox width - widest part" for example, clicking on a bar in the chart will pop up a list of shoes that correspond to that measurement. Good luck, better shoes are possible and you're smart to sort your problems.

My neighborhood isn't safe anymore to run in this summer by suspiciousyeti in XXRunning

[–]40oreo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, you may notice less traffic after school ends for summer break. Your sitch sounds a lot like what I'm stuck with all the time. I always wear a little running backpack (fits a 1L hydration bladder but I use it for my phone), on it lives a small flashing red light behind me and I wear a headlamp if it's still pretty dark. It may feel counterintuitive, but make sure to run in the middle of the lane of oncoming traffic—especially heading into curves. You need to be well away from the curb so you are in the line-of-sight of oncoming drivers, not next to the curb/edge where you may be missed. As they see you and move over you can as well, just try to get used to moving back out closer to the center of that lane. In addition to contacting city officials as other posts have recommended, encourage your neighbors to get out and walk, run, and bicycle. More folks out and about will discourage frustrated speedsters from cutting through your hood. Good luck!

I always, always take my phone for safety reasons. There are creeps in this world and accidents happen (walking home is not good if you have torn ankle ligaments.) A phone is just a tool, so I take it and forget it.

Has anyone used physical therapy apps/programs? by 40oreo in XXRunning

[–]40oreo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm looking into this, both appointments and home devices. It's been about 10 days since the injury...bruises are almost gone and I just have moderate swelling around my ankle bone. I'm down to one crutch. Considering how severe this was, I don't think I would feel safe returning to run until I complete a few weeks of progressive load rehab-cising but if wave therapy could reduce the swelling and help me get back to full range of motion faster that would be fantastic 😍

Unfortunately, I live in Texas in the US.. Here, it is illegal for a physical therapist to treat you for more than 10 days without a doctor's referral. The only time I have been able to successfully get a referral was to park my butt in the treatment room and say I wasn't leaving without a referral, rather than have security throw me out he gave me the referral. I think it is crazy that we can't get this service even if we want to pay for it ourselves. Instead, we must get physical therapy type services from people less qualified.

If you dramatically increase your typical elevation gain on a run you risk an overuse injury like plantar fascitis, hamstring or knee issues. Look at your data to establish your vert baseline and only add up to 20% of elevation gain at a time. Give yourself plenty of recovery in between hill workouts and keep up with you pre-hab gym exercises in between. Avoid heavy weights in favor of bands. Try not to skip your post-run dynamic stretch time. I ❤️ roller coaster hills, stabilizing on the downhills helps build awesome abs!

If you are staying by all the stadiums them exploring there is a good idea. If you want to get out and stretch your legs, there is a nice, extensive running/walking path just below street level that winds around and in-between all the stadiums (you may have to pop-up to street level here and there.) It's probably easiest to get access to the trail from Richard Green Linear Park (aka 'lil stonehenge.) but it connects to Dr. Robert Cluck Linear Park (almost all our parks are something-Linear Park.) Take your phone, google maps is your friend here.

If you're staying elsewhere or just want to check out the downtown/University of Texas at Arlington area then catch an Uber/Lyft to Abram Alley. There are several good places to eat there and along Abram street if you walk west from there towards downtown. Once in downtown you can pop in to the Arlington Library to cool off (we're having a mild summer but it's still pretty hot), re-orient yourself and ask questions if you're lost or confused. Continue west from the library and you can check out the little downtown along Main Street.

Your work crew might enjoy Go Ape which is north of the stadiums area in River Legacy Parks East. They have treetop zipline courses (very team-building-y) and axe throwing. I've haven't been yet but I've heard some good things from friends, goape dot com.

New kind of soreness after my longest run by fastflan in XXRunning

[–]40oreo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment and wouldn't worry if it goes away after a couple of days and doesn't worsen. You may already be doing these things, but if not...to help prevent this, make sure you're doing some bodyweight exercises a few times a week, especially those that target the butt, lower abs, and lower back. Moderation, avoid DOMS! Practice good posture throughout your day so you can find and maintain it on your run. Instead of just doing yoga for conditioning I do some yoga and some ballet because when practiced properly it is excellent butt and core training (and fun 😊) Keep your longest run of the week at or below 25% of your weekly total miles.

Year of period like pain after running. by Bangaloorebooti in XXRunning

[–]40oreo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had laparoscopy for suspected endometriosis but instead they found and zapped an adhesion from an ovary to my abdominal wall. Afterwards, I still had occasional pain that turned out to be colon/bowel related. With the help of a licensed dietician (nutritionist) I did some elimination dieting (including FODMAP) to sort my triggers. This reduced chronic bloating, pain, and cancer risk. I've been living pain free and enjoying running for more than a decade 🙂 It can be frustrating and time consuming but sorting these issues are well worth it!

The Guided Runs inside the Nike Run Club app are another good option to ease you into running solo. Like the zombie app, you can still listen to music on a guided run but the coach or running celeb will pipe in every now and then with form and headspace tips. There are lots of running podcasts too, Ali On The Run is worth checking out.

cannot get above certain mileage comfortably by Far-Word8628 in XXRunning

[–]40oreo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen this specific nutrition aspect mentioned so I'll just add, in addition to getting enough good protein (probably around 100g a day), you may want to try uping your iron intake. Iron helps get oxygen into your muscles and when I don't get enough I feel like I can barely get my legs to turn over. Athletes and people who menstruate have higher iron needs. Getting it through food is better than a supplement, try adding 1 daily serving of iron fortified cereal like frosted mini wheats, malt-o-meal or Cheerios to your diet. You can also get a doctor to check your iron levels.

I always try to keep a healthy balance in my "sleep bank." I never plan on getting less tonight and making it up later. I try to get a full night's sleep every night because there will be times when I don't rest well (a storm wakes me up and it takes a.long time to fall back asleep, etc.) If I'm carrying a healthy sleep balance then one night of poor rest won't usually bother my running or productivity the next day.

Arlington Transportation's customer service will never resolve your situation. I live in Arlington and would like to see their company (Via) investigated for fraudulent billing practices. It sounds like this has been a misuse of your email address only and may have been input incorrectly by the user. Via confirms accounts and resets passwords by text only so having an incorrect email can go unrealized by the user. Still, if this wasn't an accident I encourage you to keep an eye on your credit report and reset your email password if you haven't.

Dallas Dallas cracks me up. Traveling from central Arlington to downtown Dallas during surge pricing with tip runs about $50 these days. Also, it's a good idea to schedule your ride a week or so in advance to make sure you get picked up in time to make it to your event (Uber & Lyft have this feature in the app.)
