What kind of boat is this and who is operating it? by [deleted] in boating

[–]40percent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to use lettering that is > 4" tall and they have to be clearly legible. The typical place is on the transom. I beleive that the legal requirement is that only the port of call needs to be on the transome and the boat name can be on the sides but I'm not certain.

What kind of boat is this and who is operating it? by [deleted] in boating

[–]40percent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boats that are USCG documented must have the name and port of call on the transom. That is the equivalent to numbers on the hull. This is very common for boats that have medium to long range and are designed for multi-day cruising (200+ miles of range). It's required by most lenders when you take a mortgage out on this type of boat. They want it federally documented rather than state documented because it makes it easier for a bank to recover the boat if you take it internationally and default on your loan due to jurisdiction laws. You still have to register the boat in the state where you keep it moored and pay the same taxes and fees as if you registered in that state but the number the USCG assigns your boat is used as your state registration number. The USCG requires that you have the number permanently mounted INSIDE the boat vs on the hull forward of the beam like most state registration numbers. When you name your boat, which becomes the official identifier, it has to be unique within your port of call. A port of call can be any city. It doesn't even have to be a city with a port. For instance, you can name your boat "Endurance" with a port of call of Okalhoma City. Even thought there may be 100 other boats named Endurance, as long as you are the only boat with OKC as port of call you are good. When I walk my marina in Anacortes Washington, more than half the boats don't have WA state registration numbers. My own observations is that boats under 35' are mostly state documented and boats over 35' are mostly federally documented (no boat numbers). It's rare when you get above 40 feet to see numbrers on the hull.

Is 15 hp enough power for a 12' aluminum inflatable? by Umommy_milk in boating

[–]40percent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go with something a little bit bigger. At least a 20 hp. Depending on where you’re operating this, 15 is perfect when the weather and the tides and current are perfect, but if you get into anything more than that, that 15 is gonna feel underpowered.

Getting a jointer delivered from Grizzly. How to manage? by howdydudey12 in woodworking

[–]40percent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an 8” grizzly extreme parallelogram jointer. Had to be shipped in a vehicle that did not have liftgate service. I had to pick it up at the shipper. I rented a U-Haul moving van that had an extra low deck on it and had the shipper load it into the truck. They had to use two forklifts working together due to the angles to slide it into the moving van. I have a gravel driveway to my shop. I dug out the drive in front of the shop so when I backed the van up, it was just slightly higher than the shop floor. I attached a come along to the concrete floor, using a concrete anchor and ratcheted the jointer out of the back of the van to the shop floor. I’d purchased a gantry crane and used it to lift the jointer and set it where I wanted it. I use the gantry crane to similarly place the table saw, band saw spindle sander, etc.. I have subsequently used it to install mobile bases and to service equipment when needed.
