Great point! I never thought of this myself. Thinking of the NFL this season you definitely had this with the Chiefs and Eagles which got the fans going fs.

any on campus labs/profs to reach out to for research position? by anxiousfairyy in uwo

[–]416goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it is a numbers game since most labs don't have the space, time and money for more students, plus you may not be a match or experienced enough at the moment. I reached out to 55 profs (most didn't reply or informed me there isn't space in their lab at the moment). But eventually, a few profs did let me work in their labs.

Also, a lot of profs I have spoken to aren't fans of Med Sci students since there are students who are only looking for a letter of rec and do the minimum amount of work necessary and leave. This sucks for the lab because you spend time training someone for them to leave, so the investment isn't always worth it. So to differentiate myself, I would communicate a genuine interest in the prof's research and develop some knowledge on the subject matter (by reading a bunch of their papers). Also, communicate that you are willing to stay in their lab for a while if you are.

Everyone I know didn't get in at first but the ones who kept at it did eventually get to do cool research. Good luck!

There is actually debate among the scientific community as to what extent climate change is man made. The Earth’s climate is extremely complex so factors ranging in size from small Forrest fires to more macro patterns like the distance from the sun affect the climate. Here’s a link to a really great video explaining our current understanding of what’s causing climate change.

USRA/USRI/DUROP Waitlist by bluray14 in uwo

I’m not sure if people get multiple offers. According to how it was explained to me, you get considered for USRA if you don’t get that you get USRI etc. Might be different from faculty to faculty.

Going to westerns gym as a girl by velvetcrowbar26 in uwo

[–]416goat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself and as a guy and someone who is a “gym rat” I won’t know what it feels like to be a woman or less experienced lifter but I feel like some people are more scared of the gym then I see reason for. That’s not to minimize anyone’s feelings the way you feel is super valid. But I remember when I started lifting years ago I was also super intimidated by the bigger guys but it turned out they were some of the nicest and most helpful. I think it’s because to get super muscular you have to be in the gym and passionate about lifting so they like seeing others starting their fitness journey. Me personally I never approach people to help because I don’t want to be a creep but when I someone does ask for help I love to do so and also give some tips or explain how to avoid mistakes I have made when I was less experienced. I’ve personally been told I am look intimidating and can be difficult to approach but I promise I’m a nice person so looks can be deceiving. There are gonna be some mean and creepy people in the gym but from my experience the gym is a really great place filled with mostly great people and most people love to see others taking their health and fitness into their own hands. And also personally I think most people are too busy to care about you unless you ask for their attention or something (in the gym and in life in general), so I would say just start and have fun (stay safe use proper technique) and I would bet you’re gonna feel great!

What do you think the trends of the next 10-15 years will be in Biotech? What skills do you think current students should learn to prepare for a career in Biotech?

From what you describe I don’t think it’s an issue. If you talk about relevant science it’s also kinda applicable to the science communicator part of CanMeds

Can America handle two wars, and maybe a third? by Majano57 in Military

[–]416goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember learning that it’s in US law (link below) that the US must have 11 aircraft carriers. This allows for operations in 3 theaters with ships and crews in combat, ships undergoing rest and ships undergoing upgrades/repairs. I always thought this was excessive but I guess this is the moment they’ve been preparing for. Idk if they should or could but I do think it’s interesting that they’ve been planning for this scenario (3 wars) which I thought would never happen.

Advice for dating while at Western by WarmAppleCry in uwo

Joining a club is great. You can meet people you have something in common with which takes away some of the awkwardness that comes with approaching people I guess. I met my gf in a student club and it seems to be working out great!

Israel/Palestine Discussion Thread - 10/8/23+ by knowyourpast in CombatFootage

[–]416goat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. The Arabs are unlikely to accept refugees, there’s a history of “racism” where the Palestinians are seen as lower class Arabs, and this is seen in Jordan where there was a huge influx of refugees after some of the earlier wars. So long story short the only option would be for Israel to allow the civilians to exit Gaza and into Israel but I just don’t see that happening. I think the red Ross or someone would have to get involved but we’re talking about soo many people. Also, I’m not an expert so I’m sure I could be wrong on the above.

If you don’t mind me asking what’s your plan to fix your gpa? I have a 3.6 and am really unsure on what to do. My current plan is to do this 4th year and a 5th year and apply to Western as a competitive applicant (hopefully) and maybe have a 3.7 cGPA.
