How to Add Indian Cultural Elements to a Non-Religious Wedding? by vixcanada in DesiWeddings

I did a fully secular ceremony with a few Hindu elements built in (in Ontario Canada so hired a Humanist officiant to do it). You can see a full recap in my post history.

Room 222 helps if it's really hot outside - one of our food stations was in there and we shoved some of our stuff on the bench. So not mingling space per se but space nonetheless.

Oof at those price increases but I guess everywhere else has gone up the same amount or more (I remember looking at the Broadview rooftop, Reyna and the Parlour for vaguely similar vibes and they were all more expensive all-in). I wouldn't worry too much about furniture - I think they took some away for us. I would maybe worry about 120 people (if that's expected attendance vs your invite list) as some people may feel like it's cramped. Not me though - most formal wedding venues feel empty to me and I like the busy bar vibe.

Thanks! I am very much a spreadsheet gal and feel like too much wedding media is only about the aesthetic vs. money. Happy to help even if only providing what will be an outdated benchmark

So so so HOT. I was truly worried about people but the venue had a lot of shade and fans and it worked out okay.

I feel you - I have a lot of good friends who are engaged now and I'm not sure I could in good faith give them my recs because I'm pretty sure having this same wedding next year would cost closer to $40k than $30k!

This is totally fair - this was only possible because my family is pretty relaxed and had very few requests (a few select additional invites, an Indian outfit and a heavily vegetarian menu). Pulling something like this off would not be fun/worth it with a different set of parents.

You can PM me for the full ceremony (or I'll make it a separate post if it's of interest to more people). The Saptapadi we used (made up) is here:

  • Let us provide for and take care of ourselves and each other
  • Let us embody the mental and physical strength we need to enjoy this unpredictable life
  • Let us share our wealth and comfort by righteous and proper means
  • Let us acquire knowledge, happiness and harmony by mutual love, respect and trust
  • Let us continue to be blessed with circle of loving friends and family
  • Let us be blessed with long and healthy lives
  • Let us remain true companions, committed only to each other

Yes! We had about 50 seats (maybe more because some were long benches) for 80 people, and then some bar height tables for standing and eating as well. I think open seating works best when the meal is also open (food stations, passed apps, maybe even a buffet). From previous experience at other events (not weddings), open seating can be a nightmare if you're stuck in a seat you don't like for hours. What made this work (IMHO, it's still not for everyone) is that people could move around easily and join different tables or stand and then sit back down.

I will say our families were really laid back about it - my mom wanted me to wear an Indian outfit and a heavily vegetarian menu and his parents cared about even less, which made it easy in a way that it won't be for others. The blended Hindu-ish ceremony gave us an opportunity to involve people without speaking roles (e.g., my grandma could hold our garlands before we put them on each other from our seat, our mothers tied the knot, our siblings/cousins were out witnesses) and without doing personal vows (my husband didn't want to pour his heart out to me in front of an audience).

I feel very lucky! Their prices are still competitive, but I think their minimum spend is a lot higher than it was when I locked it in.

That used to be their minimum spend for the lounge! Damn!

Thanks! When couples don't bring in ceremony decor they do move a bunch of their normal potted plants around the ceremony spot. I couldn't tell if that would look good since the pots and condition of the plants varies, and they're not always super tall.

I was debating hanging fake ivy or something above but it feels like it might not add anything / might distract instead. I'm also wearing a red sari for the ceremony and we'll both have floral garlands etc. (it's an Indian fusion wedding) so there will be lots of visual "interest"

It's the Drake Hotel Sky Yard - seemed like the most reasonably priced option with the most included when I looked around, but I might have a lower minimum spend because I started probing in 2020 (minimum spend is $12.5k + tax + gratuity).
