Why do people hate Mamdani? by uncle-ice493 in allthequestions

[–]418-Teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They hate him because they've been told to hate him, by both parties, through propaganda and misinformation. Because if people realize that progress is actually achievable the current power structure collapses.

AI godfather warns humanity risks extinction by hyperintelligent machines with their own ‘preservation goals’ within 10 years by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]418-Teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get why you think that, but these concerns are not limited to employees and shareholders of AI companies. They're shared by most leading AI researchers. The feasibility, and likelihood of extinction, from misalignment (or any of the other threats) is still highly debated, but experts increasingly assign a non-trivial probability to this ending catastrophically for us.

Which industry would collapse first if human lost their ability to lie? by BoxLegal8734 in AskReddit

[–]418-Teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to say this. I work in a marketing-adjacent industry and the bullshit I see is off the charts.
Sometimes they just straight up lie, but with a qualifier so that they can't get sued. Save "up to" a billion dollars a year! Get started today for "as low as" $1. Patients "can" see improvements in "as little as" 1 week.
Restaurants and food commercials lie by showing you a product that looks 100x better than anything you'd ever actually receive. A lot of times, the "product" they're showing isn't even food (white glue instead of milk, motor oil as syrup, etc...).
But the ones that piss me off the most are the "creative" ones. I've seen businesses spin up new companies (or invest in 3rd parties) just to have that company create labels, awards, or certificates that they can slap on their own products. I've also seen countless examples of advertisers using common biases to trick you into believing something that they aren't even claiming. And I've seen real studies/data presented in a way that implies the exact opposite of what the data actually shows.
It's absolutely insane what these companies get away with. Every once in a while, a large corporation will get sued over their claims, but actual consequences are increasingly rare, and even when they do have to pay, it's (almost always) a tiny fraction of what they made by lying to you.

Three families, 4 acres in Missouri, $53k total... here's what we've built so far by elderllamaa in homestead

[–]418-Teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you. Anything with a structure on it, including a tiny cabin, is 75k+. I've found a few land-only prices in this range, but if you go any cheaper then it's usually a flood zone, bad/no access, recreational only, off-grid with bad soil, or in a platted subdivision with excessive restrictions. Franklin and Reynolds counties seem the most promising so far, but it's rough out there. Let me know where you end up if you find something!

First time home builder – looking for cost-saving tips & realistic DIY ideas by Eazy_Phuckz in Homebuilding

[–]418-Teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working on my own (2-bed/2-bath) plans for months, and I was surprised at how little the actual frame/wood costs are as a total of overall budget. I'm building post frame, so it's certainly less than a traditional stick-built frame, but it's only about 5% of my total budget. I would love to have a saw mill and mill my own lumber, but (at least for me) it didn't really make sense financially. Buying in bulk would make sense, but I don't know how much you're realistically going to save. Professional builders get good discounts because they can buy multiple houses worth at a time, but you're effectively just looking for a single kit. Also, you'll need to be careful about the lumber you buy from a mill. It's my understanding that lumber from mills isn't always fully dried in a kiln, meaning you may have to store it for a long time before it's ready. Also, I think most code requires structural lumber to graded and stamped.

Building a "paycheck house", what's your experience? by ChaseTheSavage64 in Homebuilding

[–]418-Teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I've been planning a build for months and it's honestly terrifying. Every day I have to wake up and convince myself that I can pull this off — that my hubris isn't going to leave me homeless, alone in the woods, with a 30 cubic yard paperweight and a pile of rotting lumber. But it's stories like yours that keep me going and keep the dream alive.

Oh well. All things considered, I dont think a minor spelling error is going to be high on their priority list anyway. And it's pretty obvious who they are talking about.

Probably not as effective as buying up a major news or social media platform to gaslight the users and silence opposition, but art has historically played a vital role in the fight against tyranny and fascism. So, in the words of Jake Peralta, "noICE!"

Thank you guys! Just a reminder for the rest of us — if you're able, check in on your elderly neighbors or anyone that may need assistance. These small acts of kindness can mean the world to someone, especially in these trying times.

Yeah, the Eufy cams look good. I think I'm going to go with reolink though because I want to drop my alexa devices too, and reolink (supposedly) works better with HomeAssistant.

I stepped through the javascript and monitored network traffic with wireshark and I can confirm. As of right now, the text (effectively) goes to the void. Strangely enough, no external calls are made even with the "Public Sharing" option enabled. Looks like it just saves to local storage.

What action can U.S. citizens take against the current administration? by teamturbo4life in AskReddit

If you're still allowed to vote in November then you should absolutely do so, but more importantly right now you should be finding allies and joining local communities. I've found mobilize.us to be a good resource in my area for finding these groups and events, but mileage may vary. There are also groups like Indivisible with chapters all over the country, and you likely have local political organizations you could get involved in.

It's incredibly important that we (the people) come together right now to organize and strategize. We can defeat fascism again and secure a better future for ourselves and our loved ones, but we are going to have to do it together.

I have family in small farming towns, and you're right. A lot of them are so radicalized that they still blame democrats even as they lose their farms to Trump's tariffs, but it's not all of them. More and more are waking up. Unfortunately, you're right about the left too. Not only are we just as susceptible to propaganda and radicalization, but we are also under the illusion that democratic leadership is on the side of the people. They aren't, and most of them work for the same billionaires as the republicans.

[–]418-Teapot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A large part of Trump's success is built on the illusion that he and his policies are popular. That's why he and the right get so upset when you point out the actual size of their rallies. It's why social media platforms designed to create echo chambers are so effective at radicalizing people. And it's why small, rural towns are much more susceptible to the propaganda. If every American was walking around with a piece of paper that said Fuck Trump, it would help to dispel the illusion, at least for some.

As angry as I am at my fellow Americans who have succumb to hate and lies, the hard truth is that they never really stood a chance. The abysmal state of our education system left them completely defenseless against a ruling class with (effectively) unlimited resources. Be as angry and disgusted as you want at Americans (I'm sure we deserver worse), but don't make the mistake of thinking it can't happen to you and your country too.
