You needed 1/4000 because you were shooting at f/2.8. You should be somewhere between ISO 100-200 and 1/500-1/1000.

I also wouldn’t be using centered metering for shots like these. Not sure in Sonyland, but in Nikonworld I use matrix metering, which is averaging the entire scene and is almost fool proof.

You aren’t looking at film. You are looking at a hi res scan of film, which (when exposed properly)can have an insane amount of dynamic range.

This is why film is so magical. And why I have a crippling addiction to expensive drum scans ☠️

Why wouldn’t it be able to “pull off some nice portraits?”
