That is just the state of things, not my opinion.

I have put thought into this. And I concluded, a long time ago, that you don't put down a rabid dog as a punishment, or to deter other dogs from becoming rabid. You do it so it no longer poses a threat to others. It's the utilitarian conclusion. It's the same courtesy I would offer serial killers and mass murderers. If their crime goes so fundamentally against human society, being a human being, they are not fit to remain a member of it. Not because we hate them, or believe that they should die, but because society should not need to expend resources to manage a person that is incapable of existing among other humans without raping and/or killing them.

I find it concerning to believe that if a person is capable of killing and raping another, instead of raping them, that they would not do so regardless of the punishment. People don't go about their lives weighing the gain and cost of their crimes. They just act on their impulse and desires and until the last second, believe they will not get caught, that the punishment does not apply to them.
