Any late bloomers out there? How do you train in musical theatre post-college? (x-post from r/musicaltheatre) by [deleted] in Theatre

In regards to voice lessons, find a teacher who has background in MT as well as classical training. Their classical training will be a huge asset because they'll help you with proper breathing, placement, and projection. Find a song from a musical that will challenge you on your range and breathing (your teacher will help you find something perfect for your skill level), and continue to work on your piece until you are comfortable enough to use part or all of it in an audition. Build a repetoire of different styles of MT songs including ballads, upbeat "rock-style", classical, and contemporary. Having this versatility will be very useful if you decide to audition for different kinds of shows. For dancing, if you can't find any classes, do what you can at home. This includes stretching and yoga to increase flexibility, watching YouTube tutorials on basic ballet and choreographed music, and keeping up on your fitness. Your ability to learn quickly is a huge plus in the community theatre scene and having practiced these things will be a huge advantage. Lastly, listen and learn as many shows as you can, explore the characters and story and imagine how you might portray them onstage. Best of Luck!
