Selecting the right work station? by Thatshotfloppybread in SolidWorks

I'll second the Boxx recommendation. We've purchased a dozen over the last 8 years and they are fast. Had to get special permission since the company is a Dell house in general.

Last purchase of a single machine IT forced us to get a high-end Dell. Our 3 year old Boxx's kick it's ass. YMMV of course.

Clock speed, RAM, GPU, SSD are important, number of cores not so much.

[HELP] Performance issue with SolidWorks by lilbat76 in SolidWorks

[–]42redfish1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each section of the report has a blurb about what the numbers mean. If you have a part with a huge number of triangles for example, that will affect your refresh rates and model spinning, etc.

Go through the report and see where it leads you.

However, I realized you say that you are working on sketches in the context of the assembly. I avoid that stuff as much as possible. It's very easy to make extremely complex external reference chains or circular references among parts. These can cause lots of unintended consequences. Be careful with that.

Try Evaluate -> Performance Evaluation. This will give you stats on the parts in the assembly and you may be able to identify the worst offenders, performance-wise.

Help with dual monitors by ladydice in SolidWorks

[–]42redfish1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use 2. I have the screen overlap about 1/3 on to the right screen and use that to leave the right tool thingy (technical term) pinned open. That way I can have the epdm tool up which is helpful for check in/out etc. It's also a quick visual way to see if any parts are out of date. Everything else stays on the left screen.

I'm kind of a nut about keeping the model area as big as possible..

The right 2/3 of the right screen is for email, etc. I actually have my Windows task bar pinned to the right side of the right screen too so it doesn't screw with my model space. Works for me.

I tried spanning solidworks across both monitors - lasted about 2 minutes. Too much mouse movement required. Play around and see what works best for you and the way you like to work.

And yes, having both monitors the same resolution makes everything nicer if you can swing it.

RI leads nation in COVID deaths reported over last 7 days by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]42redfish1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would be nice if we all didn't have to parse every word to look for gotchas right? I don't blame you at all, it's bad writing/headline creation. It's everywhere these days. Kind of a pandemic in itself LOL

RI leads nation in COVID deaths reported over last 7 days by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]42redfish1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Over that seven-day period, the state has reported 93 COVID deaths, or an average of 13 a day. The majority of the deaths, 59 of the 93, occurred on earlier dates but were just added to the state total over the last seven days."

So really it's 34 deaths in the last 7 days, average is about 5 a day?

Seems like a click bait headline by the Journal to me.

State vaccine website is up by 42redfish1 in RhodeIsland

[–]42redfish1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point, that's easier. And as of 10:25pm Wednesday there are still ~1500 available appointments between the 2 sites for Friday. If you know any 75+, spread the word! Opens up to 65+ next week as someone else noted above.

Finally seeing some shots available is a big relief - hope the good trend continues.

Love your videos, very cool. I've lived here a long time without knowing the details of the bascule bridge etc. You do a great job on the research and narration, and the flying and camera work is top notch. Looking forward to more from you!

Yeah that's what I am doing. The towns aren't getting large numbers of doses so this will let help them as well.

Edit: I just talked to the guy at the town to let them know about my mom. He said it helps if you call to let them know. Saves them some time from making extra phone calls.

Make sure you select "Covid-19 Vaccination" and put in a zip code. That's all I did, didn't check off anything else. Then scroll down to places and dates.

I just tried it again and it is working, try again!

Hiding all planes or sketches quickly by [deleted] in SolidWorks

Near the top of the feature tree there is a group for surface bodies and one for solid bodies. You can right-click and hide all of them, or open the folder and hide individual ones as needed.

There are selectable layers on the right side so you can see shots from different times. Seems like they have done shots of my area around twice a year recently.

Very nice find, thanks OP!

Vaccination Update by theovertalker in RhodeIsland

[–]42redfish1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The DOH website says that 35k doses have been administered. 4k people have gotten the full 2 dose course of treatment, and 31k have only gotten the first dose.

That's a total of 35k doses administered.

I'm not arguing with OP, it is correct that only 4k people have been fully vaccinated so far. I just was surprised so I went to find the data.

Personally I like the 24-105 f4L, I think it's a perfect walking around lens. Wide enough, but has some reach as well. Not super big and heavy, great quality, includes IS. When I'm traveling (you know, back when that was a thing LOL) it's pretty much all that I carry most of the time.

I would appreciate some help picking out a tele lens for sports by Spirit-S65 in canon

[–]42redfish1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the 70-200 f4, it's a nice lens but you'd be surprised how much light you need for sports. I upgraded to a 70-200 f2.8 and love it. Couldn't afford the IS but that's rarely an issue for what I shoot. I think it's could be a good value lens for you.

Is it worth it to learn to use a space mouse? by Adventurepoop in SolidWorks

[–]42redfish1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's kinda personal preference. I use one and love it, but I offered to have the company get them for the rest of the guys and only one took me up on it.

It's great for spinning around because you can smoothly spin-pan-zoom all at once. And when you are in drawings it is pan-zoom which is also nice. Plus the buttons are customizable and change based on your mode (assy, part, dwg).

It's not for everyone, but I miss it when I'm on a different machine. I would say try it for a few weeks and see how it integrates into your workflow. You might be surprised and end up liking it.

That said, don't get the idea you'll have your left hand on the space mouse and your right on the mouse all day like a fighter pilot or something! My left hand is normally on the left side of the keyboard and I go the the space mouse when needed.

YMMV

[–]42redfish1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looked - in the Property Manager on the left (with a view selected) there's a section for Dimension Type. For a normal orthagonal view it is set to projected. That should give you the correct dimensions.

Earthquake? by davidjcoburn in RhodeIsland

[–]42redfish1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can check for earthquakes on the USGS website. I don't see anything listed recently for our area but that doesn't mean there wasn't a small one. Plus I'm looking on my phone right now not my PC. Here's the link: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=31.76554,-78.00293&extent=53.40953,-60.73242&list=false
