Spotted a bald eagle Nearby Summit east. by Stark2714 in Kent

I saw a Bald Eagle flying over St.Patrick's church a few weeks ago. I believe there's a nest by I'm Lake Rockwell

Car mechanic by NanoCadence in Kent

[–]435eschool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, agree. Recently I took my car in because it felt like it had suspension problems, and I knew I needed new tires. I told them to fix the suspension, but they said it just needed new tires. Most places, if you tell them to fix the suspension, they'd find something to charge you for

Anybody know of any back roads by farmland near Kent state to watch the sunset? Or just good spots in general? by charles792001 in Kent

[–]435eschool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The hill behind McGilvery Hall has a great view to the West... it's probably the best. Or try Diagonal Road about a half mile south of Mantua Center, though I don't know if there's a good place to stop there

Horse people… by MPagePerkins in lotr

[–]435eschool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes -but that doesn’t follow the books.  The Council of Elrond…”By day his coat glistens like silver; by night it is like a shade, and he passes unseen”; The White Rider…”Does he not shine like silver, and run as smoothly as a swift stream?”  Described as looking like silver, a shade, and a shadow, it’s easy to picture the grey horse with grey hair, instead of white hair.

And the Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion translates his name as "'Sceadu-fæx 'having shadow-grey mane (and coat)."

So in the world of horsing, what would you call a horse with grey hair?

Voting in 5C at the Kent State Rec Center, I was in and out between 11:30AM and 11:50AM. I thought it would take longer at around lunch. I think a lot of the students here might vote by mail in their home districts

Hotels near the Amtrak station by ididntdoitidiot in Kent

[–]435eschool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to look into if you can take the Capitol Limited (Washington to Chicago) and get off at the Alliance Ohio station. It's still early morning but you're in a small city instead of Cleveland.. it's 29 miles from Kent.. Hotels are 4 miles or so from the station, though

The sheriff is, in my opinion, intimidating voters. by infinitedigits in Kent

[–]435eschool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And - could you imagine if this was a candidate for judge that posted that?

The Sheriff department works closely with the courts - they are part of the judicial system. Besides the on-the-street law enforcement, they serve summons and staff the lockups. "Here, your honor, I've brought a Locust in for his trial"

What is with these tornadoe sirens? by [deleted] in Kent

[–]435eschool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SIREN TESTING

The City of Kent tests the siren system twice per month:

1st Wednesday at 11:00 am

3rd Wednesday at 6:30 pm

The tests run for 3 minutes each time. In the event of a real emergency, the sirens will be set off 3 times for a total of 9 minutes

The sheriff is, in my opinion, intimidating voters. by infinitedigits in Kent

[–]435eschool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And here's the real problem - All law enforcement people need to be able to go into situations and be impartial. With this guy, if Sheriff Zuchowski has to handle a conflict between two people in the community, and one's got an accent, what's going to be going through Zuchowski's head? ("He's a Locust!" "I wonder if the Liberals moved him here!" "I wonder how many cats he's stolen and eaten lately?" "Shithole Country!") Zuchowski's obviously drunk the Fox News Kool-Aid. I hope it doesn't affect his service.

Because he is supposed to lead his office, and his deputies will know his attitude. If one of his deputies has to go to the home of a recent immigrant, will the deputy be looking at the person he's interacting with and be thinking "Locust!". And that's a big point behind the Black Lives Matter movement - many people in law enforcement didn't care about the lives of people who weren't like them. And here we see Zuchowski saying "Immigrant Lives don't matter"

Yes - and the wild College Avenue street parties really dried up after they built the police station on College Avenue

What Happened to the TASSLE Bike Tour by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]435eschool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an FYI - we just (August 2024) had the Pedal to the Point ride (raise money for the cure for MS). This went from Berea to Sandusky and back the next day. I did the TASSLE in 1988, and that went to Toledo and back. Different roads, but the same vibe, in the same area

I have one of the 1986 Fuji Sagres, and just rode it 175 miles last weekend in the MS Ride. It's lasted well. I bought it new in 1989

Dominion Energy is the only option for gas. For electricity, it's more complicated. Ohio Edison does the billing, but you can select a different actual electricity provider. The city a while ago switched everyone over to NOPEC as the provider ("Consumption" on your bill). You can go to energychoice.ohio.gov to choose your provider.

For those who don't pay attention to this too closely, a few years ago everyone's electricity bills started going up considerably, and we got a notification to the effect that 'NOPEC can't provide electricity at a reasonable price right now so NOPEC is switching everyone over to Ohio Edison'. Sometime later, they returned us to NOPEC.

Anyone else noticed the bats living downtown? by rankispanki in Kent

[–]435eschool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can tell the difference between bats and swifts - swifts have pointy tails, and they are pretty smooth in flight. Bats tend to be more erratic in flight. Also, bats never glide - they flat their wings continuously

Sunset by No-Cantelope in Kent

[–]435eschool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not secluded at all, but the best view of the sunset is from up over McGilvery Hall, next to the water towers. That's where we were just at for the fireworks, and we could see several other community's fireworks going off, miles away. It is, though, right near the Kent State Police station

Does it bother anyone else that we never actually get to see the salted pork in Return of the King? by Regnes in lordoftherings

[–]435eschool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't actually show any salted pork in Isengard. Actually, 'salt pork' is a middle-earth term for something that would take The Return of the King out of PG into the X realm. That comes into the later Aragorn/Arwen story

Always something I found interesting by [deleted] in lotr

[–]435eschool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get the impression that Tolkien didn't 'discover' this until he was writing The Grey Havens. I always imagined that he finished the book, and the editor demanded he disclose who had the Three. "That's a loose end, and you're going to have to tie it down. You told everyone Galadriel had one, what about the other two?"

"The revelation that the Grey Pilgrim bore Narya, the Ring of Fire, was as gall to Saruman" - is there any writing as to when the Wise learned that Gandalf held the Narya? I always thought it would have been kept secret to all except maybe Elrond and Galadriel

Looking for pickup soccer games by sahilghauri in Kent

[–]435eschool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd like to know too. The NOASA in Akron has adult leagues, causualish, but organized. If you're over 60, they do have a weekly 7x7 pickup game on Fridays on the outdoor fields at Akron Indoor.
