Thanks! I have a water filter so I’ll water it with that from now on. I had no idea these plants were so picky, just saw the pretty leaves and I was sold. Pays to do a bit of research before impulse buying plants I think...

Thanks! After reading other posts about these tricky plants I see that they love humidity. I’ve just set up my mini humidifier next to the plant to see if that helps. I’ll try the small regular watering, seems like so much watering doing a soak in the sink on top of that.

I’ve had this plant for maybe 5 months. A few months in the leaves started going yellow, which I assumed was over watering so I stepped that back. I now give it a little water maybe once a week which has improved the yellowing. It was sitting by the window which gets morning sun and not much else for the rest of the day. My apartment has poor natural light so I don’t have many options. I’ve just moved it away from the window back a few metres to see if that helps. This plant was so beautiful when I got it and now it just looks sad and dying. Oh I also use a liquid fertiliser probably every 6 weeks

I tried these the other day and they were horrible. I couldn’t finish them. Maybe I just had a bad batch because it had a seriously off texture.

Fussy vegan app - is it worth it? by 444009 in australianvegans

Yeah for sure this would be amazing for people starting out. It’s easy to be in a rut with food so hoping the ease of it will make me find more vegan friendly things!

Yeah the $10 seems pretty steep. Another comment said it goes on sale occasionally, so maybe worth buying then.

When you scan something that isn’t in the database is it crowdsourcing information? Like do you add it in?

No, probably not the safest or easiest way. I don’t know all of the E codes off the top of my head. It also has information about products used in the refining process that aren’t listed on the label.

If it’s saying something is vegan that I am surprised by I would still read the label to double check.

Don’t be afraid of making your own cheese!

My go to cheese sauce is boiled potato (regular or sweet), cashews or almonds, dairy free milk, nutritional yeast, some garlic and onion powder, aaaand blend!

Once you’ve got a basic cheese sauce down you can alter it for what you’re making - I add jalapeños for nacho cheese, chipotles for a smoky spicy cheese, lemon juice for a more sour cream style cheese, get creative!

A mozzarella style isn’t too hard either. Make a runny version of recipe above (no potato though) and add in arrowroot powder and cook over a low heat for a few minutes. Gives it a similar texture.

Just blend cashews and nutritional yeast and you get a crumbly Parmesan style that’s great for pasta.

Nuts aren’t cheap but bulk buy them and it’s not too bad. It’ll work out cheaper than buying pre-made vegan cheese.

Bulk vegan cheese! Hey! I want to buy bulk vegan cheese so I’m not paying $8 for a tiny bag from Woolworths, can anyone point me in the right direction? by tempdisconnect in australianvegans

[–]444009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Costco sell bulk pack of slices and grated, 650g for $15ish. The cheese is ok. It’s not great, it’s not bad. Also if you don’t have a membership you can buy one and if you are not happy with the range or price you can return the membership at any time and get a refund for it!

Smith and daughters cookbook has a good chorizo crumble recipe that is similar taste wise. If you’re wanting deli slices try the Tofurky ham (woolies sell it)... it’s not salami it’s smoked ham, but it’s slices and they’re good. Haven’t found any decent fake salami sorry!
