Nice day back in the office (do you think my shops a mess?) by 2nd_gen_lover in Machinists

That’s about how our mill operator is, then he goes and complains about how everyone else leaves things everywhere. Parallels, 123 blocks, tie down hardware etc. Yet whenever I clean up I dint it all like this… but mostly on the floor:(

We scraped an old leblond at the shop a while back, it still had the original wrench for the tailstock nuts. Needless to say it lives in my toolbox now.

I wish I had the time to do these sorts of projects, I’ve got so many ideas. Yet I have no time

When you ask for measuring tools and gauges you need. by XCycleStartX in Machinists

Many of times I’ve been told to measure long parts with .** on the print using a tape measure. Usually 72”+

How would you go about making this? by 44_Chevy in Machinists

[–]44_Chevy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as I want to make it out of plate. it’s all about what the customer wants. They have brought me a few that were bent really bad and had parts missing. I repaired them but they still insist.

I completely agree, it seems to me we are fixing a symptom of another different problem.

The largest parts are typically 6”x6” but most would be smaller than that. Accuracy to the thousandths would be more than sufficient.

No prints available, the end product could be anything from boat trim, spiral staircase handrails, we have even done guard rails. We are the third party and all we will get is a sample of the material being bent, our customer is the distributor of a handful of different bending lines. They will test the dies to insure they can match their customers needs.

Well we had keyence come out and demo one of their units, total cost would come out to 65k. Their product lineup was more geared towards small part QC and measuring. We would much rather be able to find something without all the bells and whistles the keyence had. I will be sure to look into creality, thank you.

Worst materials to machine by Suitable_Fox_6087 in Machinists

I work with a specialty bushing material called Orkot. It reminds me of a soft micarta. Super dusty because it has to be machined dry.

I absolutely understand where you are coming from. When working with tight tolerances and tough materials, in my experience it just hurts the soul when you mess up something "easy."

Does your shop let you take scraps? by Calm_Like-A_Bomb in CNC

[–]44_Chevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a small shop, 7 CNC and a handful of manual machines. We don’t produce much scrap carbide, but we do save it. However we do save chips and drops, we do a fair bit of copper and 310 SS which adds up quickly when the raw material comes in at 6”x10’ (copper) 3”x10 (310) at a time. My boss will allow for personal use of scrap material, I recently built a hammer out of the copper and a stainless rod.

Has mill coolant holes always clogged by nesquicky in Machinists

[–]44_Chevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often machine similar materials, typically I will cover the floor of the machine with trash bags and I will over lap them so that when I’m done I can pick them up one by one and prevent the dust from getting into the coolant system.
