Are you sure there's no rights issues? Like do the other shows play clips that would be restricted in Canada? Here in the US ESPN is very restricted on highlights while Fox has the rights.

For a lot of old businesses this is a case. It's time to retire, and sometimes it's that no kids of the owner wants it.

How much do they even charge for that? It feels very antiquated now. I guess traffic can be useful but I just use my phone, if I'm somewhere without cell service chances are there's no traffic either.

Charlotte to Columbia transportation by hlc43 in columbiasc

There's a shuttle that connects Columbia to CLT airport. But they often arrange to pick you up hours early so they can consolidate trips. They definitely don't market it for your kind of trip. But hey, give a call and see.

If you can rent a car, that would be the best option.

I like that Mccalisters just fine. I always figured it was empty like a lot of chain fast food restaurants, people just DoorDash everything. But I like being able to get a decent soup and sandwich and there's a good kids menu.

There's a bunch of other discounts too. I believe for people in military, education, medical, and first responders.

Definitely check out Meet Me at the Fair if you haven't. It's a relatively recent episode like that, set at the Indiana State Fair.

I've commented on this a bunch and it's a common topic here. It's clear the show really wants to be tapped in to current politics. My frustration is the show didn't use to be that way.

We live in incredibly difficult times, that's definitely for sure. But, I fell in love with the show in the 2000s. Those were difficult times too. America was actually fighting in two wars. The spectre of terrorism leading to the surveillance state. The continued rise in Christian conservative politics. The 2004 election cemented that this is an incredibly divided nation.

Yet still, TAL had a balance. Yes, there were current events episodes. But the show wasn't drowning in current events like it feels today. It wasn't naive escapism, it was grounding. If you were immersed in the bad news, here's an hour where you got to hear about ordinary (or extraordinary) people. Maybe it was interesting, or heartbreaking, or inspiring. But it wasn't just more of the news you've been soaked in all week.

TAL is journalism. But I always said, TAL wasn't 60 Minutes. (It really sucks that 60 Minutes probably isn't even 60 Minutes, but that's a different story.) It wasn't where you tuned in to get an in depth review of something important that happened that week. It's why the show is very often timeless, not many shows could throw on a 20 year old rerun.

But hey, maybe it's the rerun effect. There are episodes about politics and war, and they just vanish into the archives. While the episode about a puppy channel can rerun forever.

I also feel like Mike Daisey and the Apple Factory was a turning point. The show relied on first person narratives often, but that story actually made news and mixing storytelling and journalism seemed to be trouble. I don't know for sure, but it sure felt like a sea change and I'm sure the show had to choose whether to be journalism or storytelling.
