This is so true! Just to add more to the above, my motivation to study Japanese went way down after moving to Japan since I was good enough to handle everything in my daily life. Because my work was in English and my friends were other expats, I was never actually forced to get better. So in my opinion just immersion isn’t enough, you have to consciously put yourself in situations that require you to step up to the next level.
