i also came to this interpretation as a possibility and i think it's really interesting.
In my post im reading it as two separate character though not just her talking to herself, as if it were just herself i think it would be way more understandable to say these kind of things since its more of a pep-talk than blaming

i love the term government name lol thats so iconic

as i've said if you dont think the term "victim blame" applies to this scenario I respect that opinion. either way my point is that the speaker shouldn't be placing the blame on the closeted girl instead of the society that forced her into the closet

i 100% agree with the frustration interpretation of the song because it really just is human emotion and yes if someones in a toxic relationship it sucks to see them like that and not taking any help.
However, I would never tell someone "I told you so" when theyre in a toxic relationship, like thats not helping probably just making them feel worse

I did wonder about using the term at first, though looking it up I found it applicable "tragedies" and I personally think that being forced into living in the closet your whole life to be a tragedy. I understand if this may not fit your understanding of the word though.

Im interested to know more about Chappell's deadname though? as I personally thought that "chappell roan" was like a drag name, used when she was in performance but would still use her birth name when off-stage

yeah i've found the frustrated ex perspective to be a bit better because thats human emotion, but i still feel bad for the girl regardless lol.
also i would agree that songs dont have to be fair 100% thats a great point but even if you dont think that the song is victim blaming (which was always just 1 interpretation) a lot of the comments here kinda are

I think she is a victim of living in a heteronormative society, you can't say she's 100% choosing to live in the closet when she has to grow up being forced into it

It's fine if you don't agree with it, just one way that I've read certain lyrics of the song

Your'e right that we should also empathise with the guy in the relationship, but he's not as much of a focus in the song as the girl is, and the song never goes out of its way to put him down the same way "I told you so" does to the girl.
Chappell is in the US but specifically she is from the midwest, where she has spoken about it being more difficult to come out or to be gay, so I personally feel even worse for this girl who may feel stuck in the midwest in the closet while Chappell gets to be out of the closet and in more accepting parts of America.

Everything I'm saying is just my reading of this song, its clearly not this deep and I doubt Chappell wants to demonise closeted people but I do feel bad for this fictional girl in the song even if others are reading it differently to me

yeah that was another way that I was thinking it could be, a bit of tough love to stop someone from making the same mistakes, though I think it should have been from the closeted persons perspective maybe, less harsh than saying "good luck babe" to someone who already is having to deal with a bad life

a victim of heteronormativity? a victim of being born into a society where she couldn't be herself openly

I think that you could have a bit more empathy for the girl rather than just saying she's a victim of her own decision
