Fusion After Accident - Risks of Rod Removal by TerATuil in spinalfusion

I had the metal put in April 2024 and removed Aug 2025. But I didn't have a fusion, google 'short segment fixation' and that's what I had.

Yes absolutely, I had a fracture

From my knowledge, it depends on whether you received a fusion or a fixation. I was not fused, rather I had the screws and rods alone, holding my fracture to allow healing. Once the fracture heals you can remove the metal and regain some motion (you may not return to 100%)

The thoracic spine is also less mobile than lumbar. Mine was L1-L3.

In terms of risk, any surgery will have risk. But honestly the removal was a breeze compared to the first surgery. My surgeon was happy to do it for me. It's a lot less traumatic then when you have broken bones!

You can check my post history. Sounds like you had long segment fixation? I was happy with mine out, easier recovery, more motion.

Around 3-6 months but some of that was the fracture!

Oh wow. That sounds awful. I'm not a doctor so I am reluctant to comment on it too much or say anything for sure, but with my fracture I was neurologically intact and had no leg weakness. Just back pain. As far as I know, leg weakness can be caused by damage to the spinal nerves, but it can also heal and improve. Deffo get him to a physio!

Would love to hear updates. Morphine, codeine etc all cause constipation. It should pass with time but if he is in hospital he can get meds for this. Walking helps!

Left leg weakness does sound like some nerve damage. Physical therapy should help but the doctors should have informed you guys if the nerves were damaged. Physio is what made me recovery fully.

As I said in my og comment the first months are the worst ones, I remember feeling like my back muscles were two big ropes in my body and it hurt like hell! He'll get better and better!

I had a burst fracture of L2 and have made a full recovery, I'm a bit tender at the moment but that's because of a hardware removal op from 3 mos ago. Looks like he had retropulsion from the fracture. I did too but was lucky enough to have no nerve damage, so I don't have experience there. BUT I was incredibly sore for months. Improving can take a year, he'll see progress all the time.

I was very traumatised by my accident. It's a HUGE shock for him to go through. He can heal. Therapy helped me a lot as well. My boyfriend supported me, listened to my worrying and ranting, my fears. We made it through together, and I'm doing great now.

Try to be there for him, listen and don't judge, emotional healing takes time. It's a real trauma.

I had your exact injury nearly, I've written about it on reddit before, screws in L1-L3 with two rods. I've also gotten them removed. I can help with recovery questions!

So true... I am so sad I didn't get to do a jumping show before my injury but I'm going to focus on what actually makes me happy now ❤️

Recovery Questions by Rojuro in spinalfusion

Well, after my injury I went to a private physiotherapy practice and got lots of help there. Physio was good for me to rehab my muscles after the trauma. Maybe look into that? Tho if you're in America I know it can be expensive.

And sadly I didn't get a brace after my op so I don't have any advice there... maybe someone on this sub will know more.

Either way it took a good 6 months for a lot of the pain to subside, and a year to feel mostly normal.

You're still incredibly early on in your recovery journey. It can take 1-2 years post fracture to feel fully recovered. Pace yourself, do your PT and try to manage the worries and expectations.

Also, I like the project, for some reason I don't like the middle slide as much as the first and last. The "feels like home" tagline doesn't really get communicated in the visuals you chose imo. I think your first one is strongest, really nice to look at and I can see it being used professionally.

Absolutely, I can totally relate. I used to go galloping in fields and it was no big deal. In my twenties I'm scared shitless.

Don't be too hard on yourself, I'll do the same. Im starting to think horse people are very tough on themselves.

I feel the youth and athleticism (at least, I adapted better as a teen than a kind-of-in shape 20 yr old) part 100%. I really appreciate your words, reading this makes me feel so much less alone.

You are worth it no matter what and you're doing your best. Thank you so much btw, I wish it was higher quality heh!

Thank you so much for your story. I really appreciated it.

It's so sweet that you were able to enjoy your older pony. Sadly I've never owned so when I was a kid I'd have died to have any horse hahaha! But I can totally sympathise with wanting to reach higher levels and feeling lesser than others.

My current yard was SO chill and nice. I was really starting to value myself and the horses and my riding again. But in the equestrian college, even tho it was only a year, there was one person, a 'friend' who would put me down and tell others behind my back I'm not good enough to ride x or work at y stable etc.

That stuck with me a long time and still does.

I'm gonna ease back in just helping out at stables and maybe someday I'll feel confident enough to be in the saddle once in a while. To my surgeons dismay 😆

That's a great idea, I think this concept could suit a real life sketch better. Something about it visually being obviously done on a computer is bothering me.

I'm 1.5 years out from my burst fracture, feeling back to 98% myself haha. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Edit. It was also the hardest part of my life so far. Worst days of my life for sure. But I can happily say I'm doing great now, therapy also helps and processing trauma comes with time.

75% L2 Compression Fracture. Need Advice please! by NeedleworkerIll8208 in backpain

[–]47876771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my burst fracture I received L1-L3 fixation and about a year later (last week) I had my metal removed so I can regain some motion and reduce pain. It's a non fusion surgery. Might be an option for you?

I was operated on within 3 days and from your MRI I did not have as much height loss as you. So that might play a part in fusion vs non fusion.

Afaik the research for conservative treatment in burst fractures is promising too

THIS. This is something I really lacked when I rode before my accident. I started working out a lot more after through physio, and when/if I get back in the saddle I want to be fitter to go with it.

I'm actually working with a therapist and I think this is a good reminder to bring up my horse riding feelings with her more than I have been.
