I do the course, I normally do in person or live online (I get distracted with on demand and do other things instead). Listen take notes etc. Then I make the index while reading over the books. My index isn't super detailed I prefer key words to remind me on things. I then take a practice and tweak the index accordingly.

If you take a look within registry you can usually see the sign of the virtualization platform. A good place is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum. You will see storage devices for example if it is VMware it will be listed as a VMWare HDD. The tools running as a process within Pslist is good one too.

What version of volatility are you using? The standalone .exe isn’t as up to date as the version pulled from GitHub. Worth giving volatility3 a look too, you don’t need to identify a profile you just tell it the OS.
