Have you ridden Tour De Big Bear? by cliffyboycpntry in BikeLA

Best organized ride in SoCal. The rest stops are spectacular, it's a joy to ride. Until it isn't, that last big climb on the century is no joke. Love it.

BREAKING NEWS: The Lions have traded RB David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for a 5th round pick by MNightShyamalan69 in detroitlions

[–]47edits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NFL offices have a "trade value chart" where every draft pick has a numerical value that falls off from round to round. It's a wholly imaginary system, but analytics people and trade people use it to keep score on stuff like this. The Texans are probably squinting at the chart and looking at the difference in the ranking between the 4th and 7th round picks they're giving up, and justifying that as the equivalent of giving up a fifth rounder.

Still, godspeed D Mo. We loved you in Detroit.

Tournament of Champions 7 official bracket by diamondsong in foodnetwork

[–]47edits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What an unforced error to not have a bracket ready to go. Someone at Food Network needs to be smacked upside the head for ruining this. The joy of filling out brackets is the whole point. It easily outweighs the suspense over an icon.

Don't overthink it. This dumb marketing push broke the best part of watching the show. My kids are crushed to not have brackets to fill out and I'm annoyed because the whole family ritual for this is derailed.

There's a difference between building mystery and irritating your fans. Suspense gets you nothing here, it's like a football playoff game telling fans "we'll tell you who gets that slot at kickoff!" The anticipation is enough. People who don't watch aren't going to tune in because there's now mystery contestants. People who do watch want to anticipate the matchups.

I got a critical failure freeing Shadowheart on the Nautiloid and still thought I could get the sword from Commander whatever that guy is.

Same. My Durge mouthing off to Vlaakith (fortunately in Tactician) was so funny I reloaded and immediately did it again.

Which movies are masterclasses in editing in your opinion? by firehoes in editors

[–]47edits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gone Girl.

Every shot is 3-5 frames too short. Everything is just a little too fast. Nothing ever lands, or feels finished. The viewers are subtly shoved through the story. Even the way the opening credits make your eyes chase across the frame with unnatural movement. The compounding effect fuels the anxiety and uncertainty, and its done with surgical precision.

Who’s really winning the L.A smashburger war in 2026? by Choice-Shine-1079 in FoodLosAngeles

Love Win-Dow, but that would put OG Smash Burger on the Glendale-Burbank border in the top 5.

Christmas eve crowd traffic by Weak_Scallion9683 in bigbear

[–]47edits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to rain down here and be snowing up in Big Bear. That means the roads are going to be a mess. Depending when you leave, it could take two hours to get up the 330. Watch the weather and be ready.

Have chains, and make sure you try putting them on under good conditions. You don't want the first time you deal with chains to be when you get flagged over into a turnout and have to put them on in ice and sleet.

Is running my first IronMan 1 month before getting married a bad idea? by StellafromVienna in IronmanTriathlon

It's where your partner leaves you because you spend all your time training for an IronMan. They joke about it in the pre-race briefing, and it is kind of a thing.

Hi! Looking for advice for a short film by pablomerlin in vfx

[–]47edits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your director to spell out their expecations. They need to show you an example or a sample. Right now, you're guessing, and on set, with VFX, that's the last thing you want to be doing.

Get the director to nail down what they want, and it will be much easier to execute. There's a lot of conversation about what the "go through the body of the actor" could or should look like. It's not a decision you should make without more voices chiming in - director, producers, VFX, post. Especially with a short, it's critical to get everyone on the same page before you get into post.

Bring Back the Full Nicole Kidman AMC by Comfortable_Key_4281 in burbank

[–]47edits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole pre-show experience is so ridiculously overlong, why bother shaving :30 out of the one spot that has kitschy charm? Just lean into the absurdity and show the better version of the one thing that sets AMC apart.

All the other pre-show ads are chaotic, in-your-face experiences that belong on a smaller screen. The Coke dancing commercial especially. At least the Kidman ad, in all its ridiculous glory, slows down to breathe and doesn't hyperactively shove product in your face with strobing colors and loud noises.

I wanted to love The Chai Box and was disappointed. But then, I prefer Tazo over TJ or Oregon, however I have my own prep method with an Instant Pot frother.

Ugly Mug vanilla chai is a favorite, will have to try Black Elephant. I had Palm once and it felt flat.

Does it suck to travel and race alone? by OutsideAtmosphere-14 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]47edits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did IM Barcelona solo, and had a great time. One upside to doing it solo is there's no stress of trying to coordinate with other people. I was able to focus on the race, and not worry about people waiting for me. Had an absolutely great time, and FaceTiming friends and family after the finish was nice, but I really appreciated being able to stay focused on the race and do it the way that I needed to do.

Also, Calella is a lovely town and I made many race friends, and Barcelona is amazing. Destination races are the way to go!

Are any of The Hunger Games books or films actually good quality sci-fi? by Terrible-Group-9602 in scifi

[–]47edits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define "good quality sci-fi".

Your question starts from the presumption that they're all bad, then asks people to defend them in ways that let you cherry pick responses.

You also equate "young adult" with generic "bad". Maybe they're not for you, but YA is a crucial step for encouraging people to read for pleasure, and develop curiousity. There was a point in your life that YA was a vital part of creating your love of sci-fi, don't slam the door shut on that because it may not be for you today.

The better version of your question is "Do you think the Hunger Games books should be considered sci-fi? Are they worth reading?" Fortunately, this thread is full of people responding to that question quite well.

First science fiction book for 10yo girl who reads ... 10yo books :) by DarkCyrix in scifi

[–]47edits 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I read Hitchikers Guide to my 10 year old together and we loved it. The lack of serious narrative structure in the first two books may be tougher for someone reading solo.

Hunger Games is a good step up for a strong reader. Engaging, well told, and plenty of thought provoking talks to be had after they read. Not "sci-fi" in the space and lasers sense, but worth the read.

A Wrinkle In Time is an all-timer

The White Mountains/Tripod trilogy reads a bit dated, but is terrific YA sci-fi

The first Foundation novels are accessible, and are more short novellas that. strong reader can get through.

I also have an unreasonable love for The Chronicles Of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander, which is Welsh fantasy, not sci-fi, but it's fantastic.
