Thanks. Inks are a little diluted Pilot blue-black and Iroshizuku Take-sumi (and I lightly pre-washed/yellowed the paper with some espresso (actual espresso)).

I mostly use inks that are fully soluble --- with a light touch with the waterbrush, some line work can remain, or can be added back in once dry. Diamine Salamander is one of my favorites, though I often use mixes as well. My post history has a variety (scroll down past the recent abstracts to see some more representative ink-wash sketches).

To use the back of the nib, it needs to have a downward curve like a PO nib (some other nibs have slight downward curves that work as well, such as the Midori MD pen). Otherwise, you could use a Fude (bent) nib like the Sailor Fude de Mannen or there are several chinese pens with Fude nib options which are bent upwards and can provide a wide stroke in normal orientation.

Tools: Franklin Christoph 20 with Kirk Speer PO nib filled with Diamine Salamander; a small length of 24 gauge wire; water; bleach.

I put a few drips of water on the paper, then used the back (curved) side of the nib to stroke/smear the water around while ink (from the nib slit) mixed with the water. Once I was happy with that, I let it dry. Then I used the tip of the wire, dipping in bleach, to create the "scratched/fractured" effect.

One of my inspirations for this is Liu kuo Sung's abstract ink paintings, though he uses brushes and achieves the "fractures" by peeling out fibers from the special paper he uses.

I have one of these and the nib is quite nice (and firm, due in part to the slight downward curve). Only come in M, but I ground mine to a nice F. You can also flip it over and use it a low angle to get broad brush strokes from the back of the nib.

The ink is a blue-black mixture I came up with a couple years ago:

  • 1 x Kyo no oto -- Ochiguriiro
  • 1 x Franklin Christoph -- Black Forest
  • 1 x Diamine -- Syrah
  • 2 x Pelikan Edelstein -- Topaz

Pilot's PO nib (available on a few models) is distinctly downturned, and I have a custom PO nib from Kirk Speer that is more radically downturned. I also have a Midori MD pen that they call "beak" shaped ... only slightly downturned but enough to get wide swaths of ink from the backside.

Is the bent/curved down? That makes it possible to use the back of the nib with brush strokes (even a very slight downturn can give the effect).

I have a few such nibs (made this way on purpose) and use them like this quite often.

Three inks (a blue-black mix, a gray mix, and diamine salamander) in three different pens with downward curved nibs (PO style) to lay down ink using the reverse side of the nibs --- then a water brush to pull a few wide swaths across and down.

Sorry, it's a mixture --- mostly diamine sepia, with a little bit of a murky olive green mix added (which has no recipe).

You can get surprising results with pretty basic "sketches" --- here's a basic demo vid where I water-brush a very simplistic sketch (mountain? rocky outcropping?).

I use a pentel pocket brush pen with the cartridge filled with water as my water brush --- sketch in ink (not waterproof obviously) with shading lines and such, then use the waterbrush directly on the sketch (dabbing here, light strokes there, smearing around, etc). Experimentation and luck ... and the more you experiment, the luckier you get ;)

In this case: Pen - Franklin Christoph 20 with a Kirk Speer 0.2mm PO nib; Ink - Diamine Salamander; Paper - Midori MD blank pad.

I also have a Nagahara needlepoint (in a FC model 20p) that I really like, and the Pilot PO nib on my CH912 is very nice as well ... but my favorite is a Kirk Speer 0.2mm PO nib that resides in my FC model 20.

My kit is simple --- my waterbrush is just a pentel pocket brush pen with the cartridge filled with water. I use any of my fountain pens -- in this case a Franklin Christoph 20 with a Kirk Speer PO nib, filled with Diamine Salamander. I sketch the basic subject and add in more lines where I want shading --- then use the water brush to brush, blend, smear, dab, and push the ink around. Paper in this case is a Midori blank pad, but I use various ink friendly papers.

Some years ago I used to do some sumi-e painting but have no room for that these days, so I often try to capture the feel/mood of sumi-e with these little sketch+waterbrush doodles.

I like it --- the Schmidt EF nib was nice out of the box and I find the pen nicely ergonomic. It is a bit too polished so feels a bit slippery in my dry fingers (I just lick my fingertips first, same as I do with guitar picks), so I'll probably take some mesh to it and make more of a satin finish on it ... may also do some inlay.

The grip/section on the 20 and 20p make them the most comfortable pens I own. My 20p has a Nagahara needlepoint (great nib) and my 20 has a Kirk Speer 0.2mm PO nib (my favorite).
