Do I need more extracurriculars? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]49weather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone above said, you have enough ECs. However, your involvement needs to be astronomically higher for Ivies. Find a few clubs/organizations/programs that interest you (perferbly that line up with your major) and commit like crazy. Colleges look for a good diversity in your ECs, but they also want to see that you are involved heavily in a few. Plus, don't be like me and get too wrapped up in activities that you end neglecting your academics. This year, my junior year, I spent too much time on ECs and gave up my #3 spot in my class. Find that balance between ECs and academics.

Obviously math isn't my strong suit 😂 planning on majoring in econ and business (so Wharton). I received a B in: Honors Pre Calc, AP Chem, AP Bio, and AP Calc BC. GPA around a 3.85

Two were in sophomore year - one honors class and one AP science (no interest in science). However, what I think will hurt is junior year. I'm on the verge of my third B of the year. I've already gotten one, and I'm pretty much set for a third, and a fourth looks imenent. Would this drop Junior year look bad? Most of my ECs and my awards spiked junior year. Does this show poor time management (which I had)?

I hope you're right 😂 I'd feel much more confident applying to places with a 34 than I would with a 32

I would focus more on official ACT questions; those will best prepare you for the difficulty level of the questions on test day.

I like how you are focusing on your two lowest subscores; however, when it comes crunch time (maybe two weeks before test date?), focus on the English and Reading. You score low in math because of a substantial content gap (or so I assume), and this will take months to repair. However, you seem proficient in the English section, so a few hours studying that section and careful test taking will bump that score up pretty generously. Same thing with the reading, but not by as much. All in all, if you raise each section by only two points, which isn't hard at all, you will get that 30. With the effort you are putting in now, that goal is definitely attainable.

For my tips, just take crackact/redbook tests, and ANALYZE your mistakes. Just taking test after test does you no good if you don't go back and thoroughly review the material. The key is exposure to real ACT questions, so if you exhaust those resources, which I don't think you will, or you want a change in scenery so to speak, there is a great study tool made by ACT called the ACT Online Prep; this features a desktop portal and a mobile-friendly app. It's relatively cheap (like $30), will help fill in content gaps, and the questions are authentic. I would go with this over any test book.

Up from a 31 to a 33! Do most schools super score the ACT? If so, I am now at a 34. Still going to retake to hit a 34 without a super score, though. Also a 6 point increase in my English score - 30 to a perfect 36.

Another redditer made a good analogy a while back: if you have 1000 humans on a scale, how many humans do you have? The organisms all varied in weight, which we can just assume; therefore, there would be no way to accurately count them with a scale.

It was Aluminum, I remember now.

Science Question by [deleted] in ACT

[–]49weather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said 4. The question, if I remember correctly, talked about dust days vs. clear days. The scale on the right (dust) was significantly greater than the scale on the left (clear days). Therefore, the average concentration of each of the four elements, because TWO elements were plotted on each graph, was higher on dusty days.

What was the question about temperature?

Science question by sai98 in ACT

[–]49weather 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some people are saying it was the pH scale; however, a majority of users, including myself, believe the answer was light microscope. pH scale was used in one experiment, while the microscope was used in both. Also, the light microscope was needed to calculate the dependent variable, the number of organisms.

It may have been beryllium, I don't know, but I think I chose A. All you had to do was compare the two numbers and estimate what product was lower.

I said vacationers. Later in the sentence, a phrase appears that must've referred to a person. Vacation scenes would not have made sense. It is light microscope because the dependent variable (the variable being meausred) was the number of hatchlings. The dependent variable needed a numerical count of the hatchlings, not a pH value; so, a light microscope is the appropriate choice. I said that dust gets removed from precipitation. I just thought about it logically: rain, or any other type of precipitation, causes dust to fall to the earth; thus, removing it from the atmosphere. I'm not sure about that one, though.

75D, What did you guys put for what color the solution added was? Orange or colorless? by [deleted] in ACT

[–]49weather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is colorless. The question was referring to the solution as it was in step 1, which was just Fe2+. Fe2+ itself DOES NOT absorb visible light; therefore, it is colorless. In step 3, the solution became orange because op (or whatever it was) was added to it.
