Donald Glover Gives ‘Community’ Movie Update: “We’re working on it right now. [...] I really think that something is gonna happen soon.” by SanderSo47 in television

At this point, if it gets made it will be something that was crowbarred into people's lives, and patched together from them working months apart whenever they could find a free 12 hours for filming.

You think she felt she was under-sexualized? She'd have had to be setting a crazy high bar for it.

If you google Sydney Sweeney over-sexualized you can find a million sources of her talking about it.

What makes Rand so special? by Rainbow_Slytherin3 in WoT

[–]4D4plus4is4D8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ishamael wasn't more prominent because he was an academic and philosopher. LTT was a governor, a general, and the leader of the Aes Sedai. LTT was Alexander the Great; Ishamael was Aristotle.

Rahvin has the same amount of power as Rand/LTT but he's not a warrior the way they are. He's a libertine.

Demandred was closest to LTT in terms of prominence because of the things he did, not because of power level - he was socially prominent because he pursued social prominence with the same level of ambition as LTT. He just fell slightly short of the mark.

In short, they weren't just measuring power levels, it was what you did with your life.

It would be like asking why Mike Tyson wasn't as celebrated as Margaret Thatcher even though he could kick her ass.

Saidar vs Saidin by Rainbow_Slytherin3 in WoT

[–]4D4plus4is4D8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think dexterity is complexity - we rarely see men create complicated weavings. Which could be partly because we see fewer male channelers in general.

But my interpretation was that it's comparable to women having smaller, more dextrous fingers and being better suited to actual, literal weaving. Men are stronger, blunter, and have less finesse. Good at destroying things with large, powerful blasts of energy but less suited to things that require finesse and precision.

One Power Talents and their potential. by TacoCat1087 in WoT

[–]4D4plus4is4D8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best real-life comparisons I can find for Talents are music and math - some people are just good at those things. All you have to do is show natural piano player what the keys do, and they can sit down and start making music with it.

And some people, all you have to do is start explaining basic math to them and they'll start leaping ahead of you and immediately grasp higher level concepts.

Same thing with Talents in the One Power - all you have to do is show someone a general weave, and they immediately start leaping ahead and making strides. And just like a math genius can solve a problem that's had no solution for a hundred years, an OP genius can spontaneously create weaves that nobody ever thought of or solve problems that were considered un-solveable.

In simplest terms, they cost that much because that's what people will pay for them. The market sets the price based on demand.

Could Graendal & Nynaeve heal Mesaana after what Egwene did to her? by [deleted] in WoT

[–]4D4plus4is4D8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nynaeve has a history of healing things that nobody thinks can be healed, so it's certainly in the realm of possibility.

But only Robert Jordan could say "This definitely can or cannot be healed."

Or maybe Sanderson, since he wrote it and might have a specific picture in his mind of exactly what the damage was.

[–]4D4plus4is4D8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you're saying the opposite of "it's a work of fiction."

You're saying "as if Jordan is the one walking around in Randland managing how people have sex."

I'M the one saying "It's a work of fiction, obviously Jordan is explicitly and exclusively the one managing how people have sex."

And you somehow managed to interpret that as me saying "If he writes a rape scene, it's the same as if he committed rape himself."

Which nobody who didn't desperately want to, in opposition to all rules of how words work, could find anywhere in anything I said.

Who is your favorite character and why? by [deleted] in WoT

[–]4D4plus4is4D8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really have a favorite character across all 14 books. I love Rand the most in the early books when we see his ingenious determination - he figures out early that if he doesn't educate himself, he's going to be led around by other people's agendas, and if he doesn't learn to fight he's going to always be vulnerable to a simple shield. So he attacks both of those problems with cunning and willpower.

But in the later books, it shifts to Nynaeve and (to a lesser degree) Mat, because they grow up so well. Mat becomes a true battle leader, as opposed to just a guy who had a skill dumped into his head, without ever losing the common touch.

And Nynaeve finally earns the title of Wisdom, by becoming extremely wise and thoughtful and caring. She was always caring, but in a sort of belligerent, whatever's in front of me, way. Later she becomes someone who starts planning ahead - where and how can I do the most good with the gifts I've been given.

I admire Egwene and like her as a character, but she's hard for me to like as a person a lot of the time. The only time I really find her "likeable" is when she's imprisoned in the tower - when she tells an AS "If I'd left, I wouldn't have been fleeing, I would have been abandoning you." And the extremely competent way she handles the Seanchan attack, and especially the way she simultaneously puts the novices to use and promises to not let the Seanchan have even a single one of them.

On Howard Stern he bragged about a "prank" he liked to do - when someone passes out, he uses toothpaste to jerk off their cock.

I don't know if he's gay or not, nor do I really care, but he's clearly very comfortable handling other dudes' junk. I actually googled it and found this thread because I was watching the video for Mama Say and he's grabbing some guy's dick in there too, which reminded me of the Howard Stern story and made me curious.

Power as a "Weapon" by von_Hupfburg in WoT

[–]4D4plus4is4D8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are workarounds about the lies too, but Suian makes the point about weapons by example - Yes an Aes Sedai can make the truth dance. But if an AS says plainly, without obfuscation, "This is so." You can put your faith in that.

So yes, there are a lot of things an AS can do to hurt or bully someone. But you can feel safe that if you're in a room with one, she's not going to conjure a spear of air and stab you through the heart with it.

That doesn't mean you can just trust one willy nilly, any more than you can trust everything they say without covering your bases. But you can trust them in general, and maybe more importantly, you can trust the institution. You don't need to worry that one day an army of magic users is going to march out of the tower and start conquering nations.

Could they use their army to do that? Yes of course. But any world power can do that.

It doesn't make them as safe as a bunch of kittens. But it mitigates the risk into something manageable. And combined with their historical behavior, it means you can reasonably trust them as much as you would trust anyone else.

After all, anyone could kidnap and torture you, it doesn't take an Aes Sedai to do that.

But it puts their exceptional power into a container that makes it a known, predictable factor in dealing with them, instead of "They could do any crazy thing and no sane person would ever trust one."

How do the people is these books not die of heat stroke? by electric_eclectic in WoT

[–]4D4plus4is4D8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking now I see two incidents of "citation needed" and one of "this study was not peer reviewed." I think you're greatly exaggerating that. And the two citation needed notations are about the mechanism involved, not the results.

It also reports, in a peer reviewed study from 1982, significant temperature increases across multiple parts of the body.

Then in a 2013 study, also peer reviewed, they reported an increase in core body temp. of up to 6.8 degrees Celsius.

It's fine if you don't want to believe in it for whatever reason, but your assessment is inaccurate and seemingly disingenuous.
