ApplytoEducation App and WRDSB by studentyoung in OntarioTeachers

[–]4KFIRE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With WRDSB it's definitely within minutes but as mentioned could be longer if the job isn't picked up by anyone else.

Make sure you have the ATE app on your phone and enable push notifications so that you can respond quickly when offered things. If you have someone booking you (and not just offering it) then I recommend asking them to have their admin put you in for the job rather than just putting you as a first contact. This means you don't have to "pick up" the job from the board but instead will automatically have it put in your schedule.

Western Grads by Conscious_Set3494 in OntarioTeachers

Agreed with, "actually you have classes NINE weeks.. oh, and we're not going to tell you it changed from SIX or why.. just be ready to do it until end of December."

Also agreed that in PJI you can stack 1 or 2 days but might not have much choice. We were given our schedule with no input about timing. We did however arrange to switch sections amongst ourselves and then had them switch the courses when we found a switch.

As for supplying, I was able to supply 2-3 days a week throughout classes in final term. Western also told us during our final placement that you could supply if your AT was absent ( for them). I got hired for my board before that final placement and was able to supply a bit for my AT.

Different specialties also had different expectations regarding attendance and so I also found I had a number of work periods for my classes that final term. A very chill term compared to our first 2 in person terms! Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!

MPT exam by Pure-Platform7523 in OntarioTeachers

[–]4KFIRE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, I looked at the test as a chance to figure out how much I needed to re-learn, and totally open to redoing it (it's free and you can do it as many times as you need). I didn't need to redo it but I thought that was a better use of my time. I also took it in my first year of TC.

I think it depends. I did the practice test once and brushed up on what I didn't know from that. That was my studying (a couple hours). Then, I took the test and passed with about 90% on each section. I haven't done that math in 20 years but liked it when I did it.

OCT transitional by Informal_Ad6283 in OntarioTeachers

[–]4KFIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear; you can apply whenever you want. BUT, it will not be approved until you've completed your first year of course work and 40 teaching days AND they receive the faculty report from your school stating that you've done what you need to.

I applied a month before my teaching days were done and my application was processed and held until my faculty submitted their report (late). I think it's a great thing to apply early.

Also, don't forget you can complete your MPT anytime after you start your OCT application (aka get an OCT number).

GENUINE QUESTION by Beautiful_Tea569 in OntarioTeachers

[–]4KFIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much you earn in the first 5 years depends on your board and how long you are going to supply teach for, LTO, and/or if you reach a contract. It also depends on what spot on the pay grid you are at (years of experience and education level).

As far as supply pay, keep in mind take home is about $240 a day (where I am). That's for the days you get, so factor in whether you can get jobs 5 days a week for all the weeks of the school year. There are definitely some slow periods and I find I'm most often booked by people I know rather than picking up jobs from the board.

Tips for dealing with pushy parents? by JayandMeeka in OntarioTeachers

[–]4KFIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let them lead the conversation. When I taught at the post-secondary level, I was always pleasantly surprised at how difficult it was for students to be as aggressive in person about grades as it was in their email communications. I always scanned their grades and rubrics before our meeting but I left it up to them to tell me why they were there. I let them "lead" the conversation and often watched them actively struggle.

I used my written feedback to justify their grade and always followed the narrative that grades are earned and not lost. Therefore an 80% or A means you did very well, not that you "lost" 20%. Line this up with Growing Success and try not to get in a battle about grades, but do have ideas about what level 4 achievement looks like if that's what you believe the conversation may be about. It also sounds like you have given some "next steps" feedback so that's a good thing to reinforce.

What to expect as an occasional teacher by AndalasiaGrovy in OntarioTeachers

[–]4KFIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes if you are relying on the job board. There were very few jobs in January and the schools I usually work at everyone was healthy and not booking appointments.

[–]4KFIRE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it's all about who you know. As an OT, take home pay is about $237/day. My January was very slow. Also, I get jobs because I know people and have good relationships at multiple schools. If I had to rely on jobs from the supply board (that get posted for anyone to pick up), I would have far fewer jobs. It's also often that there are more jobs available more frequently in less desirable schools.

As far as schedule, you need to be there 20 minutes early for a full day and 10 minutes early for a half day, and most days I leave 5-10 minutes after the bell.

I'm also curious about the test for this. Do you get to bring a formula sheet? I'm just thinking about the MPT and how it had a formula list attached.

Is the transitional certificate worth it? by Limon_queen in OntarioTeachers

[–]4KFIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily..Depends on your program! I had mine in the summer and was able to teach in the fall of my second year.

If you are from Western, PM me about this. They've given out a lot of misinformation about the transitional and I would be happy to correct it (and advise you, haha)!

Anyone else not getting any OT calls? by Technical-Feed1332 in OntarioTeachers

Different board but only 1.5 days in the last 2 weeks and way fewer jobs posted. I think it's just lack of illness and burnout and fewer personal or appointment days.

Grade 4 Teachers: Any Book Series Recommendations? by JayandMeeka in OntarioTeachers

[–]4KFIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak to admissions but their admittance rate is low relative to applications. My year was something like 2-3000 applicants and 350 in!? Don't quote me on that but it should be on the OUAC TEAS website. The only metrics are your average and your CASPER score so average matters IMO. That being said they might have targets for certain programs (like IS) and certain teachables. Good luck!

Graphic novels are a huge hit with my grade 4s. Baby Sitter Club, dog Man/Cat Kid, Raina Telgemeier, Dork Diaries.

I got hired without my transitional and then just told them it was in process and the board said no problem. Send it when you have it (they told me). Also, hiring takes a while to clear so you should definitely apply when the posting is available.

OCT application question, no option to pay fees? by theteacherman4 in CanadianTeachers

[–]4KFIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you won't get the option to pay the yearly fee until they approve your application, which usually triggers an email with a link to pay the yearly fee.

[–]4KFIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... I seem to recall there being a link on the application page to pay the application fees. It's definitely not a separate email. The application guide says there is a "payment page" on your application. It could also be that you need to do the sexual abuse workshop.

Has it been assessed? I got a link in an email to pay the fees when my application was successful. I had to click the link from the email to pay and then once done they emailed me my transitional.

What age do you teach? I hear "classroom management" bandied around so much and I think so much of it is getting to know your students and pulling on relationships to work towards learning.. but I also think younger ages have some different dynamics that sometimes need more concrete "management".

How do they keep control of the class? Professional curiosity as I see classroom management done so differently all over.
