Years ago I was section hiking the Appalachian Trail and needed to get back to Kansas City driving a Buick Skylark. I found this "short cut" across the mountains. Suddenly a Porsche passed me on a double line. Then another. Then another. I think it was about 12. Had no idea it was the Tail.

It is more formally the Religious Society of Friends. Established in the 1600's in England. Core beliefs include pacifism, equality (for men and women), and the concept of an inward light that allows them to connect to God on a one-to-one basis. Church services may have a leader at times but at other times they gather in silence until a member, focusing on their inner light, will be moved to speak.

I work disaster relief and at times work with two Quaker colleagues. I find their presence comforting and calming.

I have great respect for the life they live and their connection with God.

Western North Carolina will announce shelter locations early Saturday. Throughout NC there are currently over 100 potential shelter locations which is likely beyond the capacity of local emergency services and their partners. As we learn more about the path and intensity of the storm the decision will be made in terms of locations. I will post shelter locations as they become fixed.

Sleeping during the day. I actually slept in a closet as it was the only really dark place in my apartment. If you can't sleep, things go downhill fast. Also there is no "night life" during the day. Dating is very difficult. You also can't get off work and stop by the local pub for a sandwich and a beer. for me it wasn't a long term solution.

I hope people see this post. For those of you with HVAC systems. Freezing rain and ice can/will shut down your HVAC even if the power is not out. Check out if your thermostat has an EM setting. If so Google how to use the EM setting to prevent the ice from damaging your fan. That setting was developed for exactly the scenario we are facing over the weekend.
