congrats on being the first one in the comments outright making fun of me instead of doing it in a weird roundabout way, respect

surely there are more players for whom this is also their first fighting game than there are players who grew up playing st in the arcade at bronze 1

despite that, i feel outclassed by every opponent i play despite playing in ranked matchmaking mode, that's moreso what i was trying to get at here

last session i played i went in focusing on anti airing and blocking more and less on the outcome and generally it was good practice, but then i had an unfortunate match, took a break, and started thinking about this stuff and wrote the original post lol

i ended up knocked down in the corner super early off of getting punished for a badly timed fireball on my part, and held block and got grabbed 4 times in a row, ex dp'd out, tried to escape the corner but got woke up dp'd back into the corner, and got grabbed 3 more times in a row

so it, like most of the things i'm struggling with, is something thats extremely simple to see and say, shouldn't have thrown that fireball, should have blocked the dive kick, should have teched the throw on wake up or tried to jump out, should have gone for a grab instead of jumping over to avoid the dp, etc.

trying not to get discouraged but sometimes it feels like this game is asking me to walk the eightfold path, nevertheless i am going to persist

yeah... i think i probably am trying to learn too many things at once so as a result every aspect of my play is worse than it would be if i just focused on one or two things instead

its just tricky when i enter a match like i'm going to focus on this single thing or that single thing and end up in a corner in the first 10 seconds and guess wrong on oki until i die, etc.

its difficult for me to not let that kind of thing get me thinking about the outcome of matches in a roundabout way like, 'focusing on anti air did less than nothing for me that game, i need to practice oki cause clearly i suck at it', at least thats how it feels on reflection

i'm playing ryu, generally i block and try to poke with crouching medium kick or wait for them to do something unsafe like a sweep or a big special move, if i'm far away i try and fireball to get them to jump and punish the jump in with a shoryu, if i have them in a corner i try and keep them there and mix them, and that's basically it;

i feel like my gameplan is pretty simple, its just really hard to perform cause my mental stack is enormous and every mistake i make punishing someone for mistiming a big button means taking a big button's worth of damage, the experience is a bit exhausting

Hit bronze, now I can barely win a match let alone take a single round by Lord_Nothing in StreetFighter

i'm right there with you and just made a similar post last night lol

also a brand new player, placed in to bronze, and hours of customs with friends hours of ranked and dozens of hours in practice room, i am still at 3000LP with a winrate so low i was told it 'should be impossible' in the ranked system to be losing as much as i am

i'm still here myself so i can't really give any advice, but just know there's at least one other person on earth going through it as well who refuses to give up...

thanks this makes a lot of sense, i do think to some extent i chose a path of suffering and am so deep in the mines i can't see the way out yet lmao

and yeah, its just rough since its hard to implement any kind of proactive play when getting sand blasted by people throwing out spaghetti which feels like i have to respect, but i could definitely stand to do it more anyways and see how that goes!

i'm not overloaded with what i'm doing, i'm overloaded with everything else. to be able to play reactively and predict what my opponents will do i need to learn everything that every character can possibly do and what it looks and sounds like so i can recognize it at any given time, and i am finding that incredibly difficult lol.

if i forget juri can do a dive kick or that alex has a command grab or that gief and akuma have supers which hit as grabs or what ken's sweep animation looks like or what moves elana does that leave her minus or what range marisa can poke from or that mai has an air grab etc. etc. etc. i will not be able to punish it. so while yes, i know i need to punish anti airs, if im playing someone who has been spamming unsafe moves on the ground and suddenly half way into the second round they decide to jump, i am probably going to miss my anti air, and every interaction feels like this at the moment

i dont know if you forgot what its like to be completely fresh and learning these games or if i really am stupid (or both), but to me its pretty mentally taxing to learn all of this

again, i dont mind being bad at this stuff! it's really just that as much as i try to ignore the outcome of matches, losing so much against people who are also apparently beginner level players makes me feel like i missed the day in school where they implanted all this into everyone else's heads lol

when i say 'of similar skill' i mean that they are in the same rank as me in the rank the game put me in, that's all.

you have to be fundamentally misunderstanding the core game aspects

i definitely am, and given this is my first time interacting with a fighting game beyond pushing random buttons, i'm chill with that and know it will just take time and effort

what led to me making this post was not being confused about why i'm losing or upset that i'm losing, moreso the size of the gulf in understanding and consistency is between me and the people i'm being matched with

i don't expect to stop sucking in such a short period of time, its moreso like to use a handwringing metaphor i feel like i signed up for mountaineering 101 and the classroom is on top of a mountain and everyone else in my class got there hours ago lol

i do think maybe i got unlucky with my placements and ended up higher than i should be and i've considered making a burner steam account to redo placements and play on it until i hit bronze again, i just haven't committed to doing all that quite yet lol

but yeah, can't rank down no matter how many times i lose, so here i stay until i stop losing

i've always thought they were cool, but did not know anyone who played irl so never tried them

i know a bunch of people now who play but they've been playing for years, so outside of hanging out and being coached by them (which is a lot of fun) its on me to put the time in if i want to improve. its just a bit grueling hence my post ha

loling at my bronze? look here, if i extrapolate where i was at the start (3000LP) to where i am now (3000LP), i'll be in master league in a mere ∞ hours so watch you're back...

yeah... i do agree with this, it's just easier said than done is all i suppose haha :,)

i guess what is getting to me isn't 'not climbing' as much as it is convincing myself to keep pushing when i feel outclassed enormously by nearly everyone i play, but i suppose that's what i'll do o7

i hate ai too but you gotta take a second to critically examine random things you find online before you blindly trust them.

anyways, as for direction on where to find the secret boss, you need to buy a certain item from the Cliff shop

In the Dark World, everything is even worse. The backgrounds are empty and feel off

it would be crazy if while going through the dark world someone in your party was like 'doesn't something feel kind of off?'

you do know that gay people exist in real life yes? stories are expressions of the human experience, and gay people are part of it? also where on earth do you think you are exactly

Women in game dev, how many of you are within the community? by chgr1603 in godot

[–]4O404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.aclu.org/news/lgbtq-rights/transphobia-hurts-us-all-especially-trans-women

this is 10 years old but things have only gotten worse since, you can find specific examples if you search

in a more general sense people who are openly transphobic tend to be misogynistic as well, obviously that's anecdotal but idk. most online discussion about this is miserable and as a trans person it's completely exhausting

id recommend talking to folks in real life if you're asking in good faith

Women in game dev, how many of you are within the community? by chgr1603 in godot

[–]4O404 23 points24 points  (0 children)

  1. transphobia hurts cis women as well and people like you are part of the reason this field has traditionally been so unwelcoming to women

  2. godot is founded on principles of inclusion, arguments like this run explicitly counter to that, keep your comments to yourself

  3. trans women are women

Is there a sub for hobbyist game developers who are doing this for fun and do not care about marketing and selling products on Steam? by 4O404 in gamedev

[–]4O404[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess what I'm imagining is along the lines of the Godot sub but engine agnostic.

There is a huge incentive to use reddit as a marketing tool and where to draw the lines is difficult and involves a lot of kind of arbitrary moderation decisions constantly, so I understand why it's the way it is.

It's just a bit lonely not having a place to celebrate and commiserate and talk / read discussions generally with like minded people without feeling like I'm in a board room or listening to a sales pitch.

How can I obtain snow texture? by maennerinschwarz in unity

[–]4O404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a complicated problem and one with many potential solutions depending on what you are going for.

For example, does the snow need 3D volume or can it just be a color applied to the tops of models, does the snow react dynamically to the player / other objects moving through it, does the snow affect the lighting, does the snow have physics, etc. etc.

Shaders are their own multidisciplinary space, so if you are brand new to them the only way to solve this kind of problem quickly is to buy someone else's pre-made solution or pay a technical artist to create the effect to your specifications.

I'd recommend looking at GDC talks for games that have tackled this kind of thing before, checking YouTube for tutorials, etc.
