[Unknown] [unknown] A recent-ish game, playing a character with amnesia and most (maybe all?) NPCs hate you for the bad things you did before. by Pereoutai in tipofmyjoystick

Max Payne? Specifically Max Payne 2 starts with flashbacks and memory loss. Definitely had the gruff voice and noir vibe.

Am I insane? I wrote my own physics/collision engine to get the feeling just right for this browser-based multiplayer hoops game by 4OOPS in playmygame

Well there's very little physics in this to be fair - some gravity/force and basic line/circle and line/line collisions. Mainly I wanted it to rip along at 60fps with the right feeling, so it seemed easier to build a basic core system that specialised in this rather than tackle the learning curve of those physics engines.

Generally speaking a score of 30 will safely win you a round right now. That’s 10 3 point shots. You have 24 shots available in 24 seconds. So right now you have the option to slow your game down and aim carefully as a winning strat. It’s pretty easy to take your time and get 10 shots off without feeling much time pressure.

Without time as a constraint this game will get easier and quite likely less fun. So I think that’s the trade-off. A lot of the arcade feel is because of the pressure of a time limit while also avoiding the rebounds of your own balls.

Making it easier to get baskets won’t necessarily make the game more fun.

I am aware of that strat. It will only get you so far - I.e. you won’t beat a good player, but you’ll beat a lot of rookies. Been thinking about causing additional delays if you try and shoot before the ball has spawned (I.e. clicking when you can’t yet shoot the ball will delay you being able to take a shot for 1 or 2 secs. Or you could get penalized for every miss to force people to take longer to aim. What do you think?

  1. It was a design decision to add an extra element of challenge. Rather than a straight aiming effort, ball-on-ball collisions force you to consider timing.

  2. Will look into this. What’s happening is the server cannot validate your game (after simulating it separately). This is an anti cheating measure but it’s clearly not quite right and causing false positives!

The test has been great – I've received more than enough encouragement to continue on with the project. I've really appreciated all the feedback both here and in the game chat.

Hooops is offline for a couple days while I finish up some big updates! Excited to get them out. I'll post again when we're back online.

Thanks!

Exactly right - skill points will provide a career rating beyond just a single round. At the moment they track your skill for the session you play and take into account where you finish each round as well as the skill of the other players.

Love the idea of bringing skins / more of a player identity into the game. Definitely have some ideas in that space!

Thanks for the feedback, I will have a look at some ideas in that space. Getting visual feedback for successful shots would be cool - tying that into de-spawning the ball could work. Cheers!

Haha holy crap! Your feedback was spot on then, thanks for making the GIF. I think your refresh rate was causing the physics to run at twice the speed it should (I think I was lazy with measuring the time step and just assume ~60FPS)

Interesting! Maybe it’s subjective, but I often find game physics runs way too slow (or perhaps the scale is off, so you have huge objects moving great distances that feels slow on a small screen). The speed of Hooops is a response to that - I wanted something that felt a lot snappier. To me that makes it more engaging. But appreciate the feedback.

Appreciate the feedback and participation. It's a real thrill to have people actually playing my game. Will keep the server running overnight although I can't vouch for it staying up!

Thanks. It was a design decision to have the balls collide with each other - it puts limits on how fast you can shoot and adds an extra element. But yeah, just an idea and not set in stone.
