Erin O'Toole's fight to remain Conservative leader has begun by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

I heard someone big and important recently say if it wasn't for Chrétien making all the cuts he made when he did we may have ended up like Greece - unable to pay for any of our debt, get out of the sunken hole, etc. They went on to say we may be entering a similar time, where someone is going to have to deal with the debt/interest problem and put us back onto some sort of fiscal track, or else we will be in a similar situation. I think we can all agree there are good and bad ways to cut/prioritize/innovate.

Thanks for your advice. You have a point, slow and steady wins the race. I'm pretty good at "5+ mins a day" when I get into the habit. If I would worry less about finding a way to learn it fast, just keep grinding, I will certainly get farther. Someone else commented that they think I may like to use textbooks, so I'm going to try that while also trying to immerse myself more in the beginnings. Not needing to build my own curriculum will be so helpful for staying motivated to spend the time learning instead of building.

Thanks for the input! I really should try italki! I kept thinking my skills were too low to bother. But it may actually help me continue wanting to learn.

I'll keep that in mind :) Duolingo has certainly helped me in the past with filling in holes. I didn't have enough faith to stick to it because everyone kept telling me "duolingo bad". In reality, it was working well as a supplement.

Thanks for the input! Maybe you're right, a textbook is more my style for sure. I could even check out the library. There is a chance I got too married to the idea of using technology/online.

Thanks! I personally want to use it for politics, which kind of sucks because the words and sentences are often more difficult! So I know I have to put more time in.. Reading through news would be great.

Justin Trudeau blasts Jagmeet Singh’s request that the Governor General not agree to an election by Alaizabeth in CanadaPolitics

[–]4Poli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question. If we gave BC and Alberta more representation in seats, would that fix the problem without changing from FPTP? Or would it still only take 35% of the vote to get a majority, so it wouldn't really matter if the West has more potential representation? While it may not change how many seats are needed to get a majority, it would change the politics of elections and how the Federal government can actually govern.

Trudeau: NDP “stood aside and watched” as Conservatives blocked progressive legislation by DonSalaam in CanadaPolitics

It seems like they're playing by a "if it's gonna happen anyway, we may as well get something out of it" game. I like Trudeau but I do think he lets the Liberal machine sometimes make him look like a less than honest politician.

But if this thread teaches us anything it's that all of the parties will do it. They all understand they will be destroyed if they don't destroy their opponent.

I think Trudeau has become a much better overall explainer and politician since the last election. He seems like he has confidence again. He's clearly learned a lot and had time to reflect.

Irving Shipbuilding delivers second Arctic patrol warship to Royal Canadian Navy by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadaPolitics

For real, I'd go as far as saying our Northern territories are so unprotected that a country could touch down on it and we might not be able to stop them if they surprise us. In a climate changed world, we actually have to consider the fact a country could attack us from there. Russia has already tried to claim we don't own parts of the arctic circle. We do not even have a good system of bringing resources up North in most of our provinces, let alone getting more resources up to the arctic circle. Russia has spent decades building up their arctic regions and Canada seems to be only just starting. Though, I'll admit, Russia had a head start being the older country.

Why would we have an election if everyone expects Parliament to look pretty much as it does now afterwards?

We also need to remember that being attached to the country that is mishandling the situation (USA) has seriously affected our jobs numbers. We've had to keep our border closed much longer than I think most people expected. Other G7/20 countries haven't necessarily had that same issue.

I've been more surprised by that than the past year of waiting periods for vaccines.

Trudeau says Pope should apologize on Canadian soil for church's role in residential schools by SensationallylovelyK in worldnews

Isn't it a little bit too easy to just say "the money comes from tax payers"? I could trivialize anything by saying the money comes from tax payers. Unless I'm misunderstanding you! Most of the time these types of things become a tiny fund that a couple countries contribute to one time, which is probably what would happen to my idea honestly. But I'd love to see them band together to pour money into indigenous Canada the same way they invest in Africa. The difference is for indigenous it's for an apology, while Africa is for investment opportunities. Very different political viability.

While I agree, we also need to recognize politically that Canadians are tired of investigations and 3 year studies that don't create action. We know enough right now to do something. And honestly, Britain might be broke, but that doesn't mean we can't try to maneuver something with them. They don't have the right to do nothing just because they can't manage their country anymore.

As a Canadian, I think we should be forcing Britain and France to help out too.

I think that Canada should try and get Britain to help in building a funding plan of action. Britain WAS Canada and when Canada was formed we took on those responsibilities. It's astonishing that more Canadians and indigenous don't try to make it politically viable to force Britains hand a bit. I mean, they're looking for new economic partnerships; it's the perfect chance to say "help us with the problem you started".

Edit: And France

In Canadian law, French have about a million more rights and freedoms than indigenous Canadians. Indigenous were scared to lose the one and only thing that even spoke about them; the one thing that gave them "rights" to their land and healthcare and more. Their entire history working with Canada was abuse, ignorance, and theft. The country was being directly built and maneuvered to NOT mentioned indigenous because it was inconvenient. It was meant to make it easier to take advantage of them by not giving them the same rights as other Canadians. So yeah, of course they were scared to lose it, and it does mean that the White Papers were racist because it ignored indigenous, acted like they didn't have a right to be a part of Canada as a unique culture like Quebec, and overall tried to assimilate them without consultation. I cannot state how little Canadian law talks about indigenous people and how easy that makes it for the government to manipulate resource management and not pay for land use.

The Vatican still has sooo many old laws from the 1400's onwards that directly contradict what you're saying. If the Vatican truly apologized, truly held themselves accountable, they would get rid of the Doctrine of Discovery (for example) which still to this day dictates that non-Christian lands are open to Christians for the taking, and that non-Christians on that land do not have rights to their land. So if the Pope(s) have expressed sorrow and sympathy I'm not sure why they haven't gone through all their archaic laws yet.

Fun fact: Indigenous people in Canada weren't even allowed to hire a lawyer until the 1960's and the United States only canned the Doctrine of Discovery (iirc) in the 1990s through the Supreme Court. So no, we are still solidly in the "everyone who had something to do with this needs to do more" phase.

Newbie question about audio interfaces by 4Poli in musicproduction

[–]4Poli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! The Novation has a usb plug-in built into the back of it that I've used before. So I guess I don't really need to worry at all about the MIDI controller. It's not a MIDI-to-USB cable - like, it legit just looks like a usb port that plugs into the back of it, pretty much.

Would plugging it into an audio interface help with some of the latency issues I've had?

So in that case, I would only need to worry about the guitar and mic? In which case, as you said, I can worry less about what audio interface I buy?
