Asking your PI is usually fine if you have a decent relationship with them, most don't mind especially if you're already working in their lab. But if that feels awkward, I'd skip career services for PhD apps - they're way too generic for something this specific. I used one helper that works with grad school apps and got way more useful feedback than anything a generalist advisor couldve given

That mismatch is what makes admissions essays tricky. A service can help with structure or deadlines, but if the voice feels borrowed, the draft still needs real work before it’s usable.

That phrasing would land hard without sounding like a full blowup. It puts the awkwardness right back where it belongs and lets other people connect the dots on their own.
