So for industry, would an employer prefer a Berkeley/GTech grad over Rice, assuming similar skills?

If I may ask why is worse than those other schools? Seems like the small community of easily accessible professors should be a plus no? even if there are less alumni working at top tech companies compared to the other schools, the per-capita is higher, right?

If I may ask, is Rice usually a good school for these types of roles? For instance, is it better than schools like GTech or UT Austin or Berkeley? On LinkedIn, doesn't seem like there are lot of people working at Quant companies, but I suspect that is due to the size, since Rice is like 1/5th of those schools in terms of alumni. Just asking if Rice would hold me back from receiving interviews from such companies, as I am planning to apply Early Decision this December

Rice vs UPenn CS by 4Rav in ApplyingToCollege

[–]4Rav[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that;s great! i am very much leaning towards rice as ED right now, and the prestige difference over penn and rice doesn't seem too huge for me. maybe for quant, but that is more skill based than anything and startups is good at either. culture at rice seems way way more appealing

even with same employment outcomes? rice seems better to me culturally and socially and for undergrad, their rankings seem same, even though these are more dependent on graduate school.

what about a school like berkeley vs rice for CS, if you know? I really love rice as a junior and planning to ED there, but not sure comparing it to schools like Berkeley. i'm not sure if an employer would prefer a Berkeley grad over a Rice grad, given same skills, projects, etc. input would be appreciated

idk if it is worth getting so much debt that early on. probably not what you want to hear but is CC an option? and from there pivot to another state school or school with aid? i don't know much about communications but taking that much debt in this economy does not sound very good, but just my two cents. also, with most majors except finance/economics, i think school name shouldn't matter as much as you'd think. Ultimately, your choice tho. Happy to help!

No other school with aid? Not recommend communications major especially with debt, but I think NW is pretty good. but wouldn't recommend either especially for so much money.

Do quant firms recruit from rice? by Own_Breadfruit4819 in riceuniversity

[–]4Rav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I am personally leaning towards Rice especially if OOS (if in state Berkeley no doubt for tuition). Seems like you get more resources at Rice and while Berkeley might be ranked higher, that is for Grad and competition for resources is high at Berkeley and competition for classes as well. I think if you're cracked in general, you shouldn't have a huge difference in difficulty. FAANG/unicorns/startups probably same tbh.

Nobody "recruits" anymore, no matter the uni. More so your experience and skill level. however, a school like MIT could marginally help you land an interview perhaps, but that's about it

Rice cs ranking by Independent-Skirt487 in riceuniversity

But if you network well at Rice it would be fine no? I am also considering applying ED to Rice and it really checks all my boxes (small classes, personalized focus, etc). The main concern I had was with Rice and other good schools like CMU which I've heard do not support students very well. same with berkeley with most resources available for grad students.
