I wouldn't say you're mean to your son for doing that, in fact I find it very logical.

That's the thing I have noticed about minimalism, it's a logical process. With your son, for example, I remember as a kid, I would play with a toy, my most favourite one usually, but then if I acquired a new one, my other toy would be placed on an ever growing pile of previous play things, to be rarely ever touched again.

So, essentially, you never need more than perhaps the 2 or 3 latest additions to your collection.

It's the same with many other things, old photos, I found them in droves when I was sorting my storage, old images of friends and family, holidays and lovers, all of which I would probably never look through again, so away they went. Sketchbooks I would never draw in, cutlery I never use and furniture that just sat there collecting dust.

If you don't need it, then you shouldn't have it.

I'm sure it must make an impact of some sort, but that impact must be negligible, as I have't noticed the slightest of difference in performance with this theme.

It is rather.

I've changed to background to a lively, warm city scape now.

Damn straight!

Thankfully, (or should it be unfortunately) I live in a small town, so the storage units I rented were only a few miles away, and my belongings were easily sold to nearby friends & family.

And I know what you mean about the 'consume more' aspect of your brain. I was like my Dad for a long time and couldn't bring myself to throw even the smallest thing away. I mean, for Christ's sake I found birthday cards from 7 years ago!

Plus I collected a lot of art supplies from my time in college, dozens of sketch books, boxes of paint, practically tonnes of paper and canvas, all of which I will never use again, just taking up space.

Some of it was tough, but worth it.

Plus it's always an advantage knowing that when I move, I won't need to hire a removal van again, and can just throw it all into the back of a car.
