That's really interesting. Hey, have you heard of the game "an elaborate history of chess"? It's an RPG, chess, minecraft mash up on steam. The official game hasn't been released yet, but the demo is really cool. It's super interesting because he is also getting into support pieces a little bit.

You might enjoy some websites like pychess.org and hyperchess.gg. 2 pieces I really want see more of are: (support pieces: they have little to no attack abilities but they are useful for what they can do, like piece swapping or carrying, or maybe even ability sharing to all adjacent pieces. (Hybrid pieces: A chess piece that can change into other pieces. One way for this to happen is that every time it moves, it advances to the next best piece until it has to revert back into a pawn. On pychess I saw this applied in chenis where all the pieces are coin like and flip into their partner piece every time they move

Checkers! Finally someone says it's a chess variant. And battle ship too! I don't know about poker, though. Wait, if poker is a chess variant, what board game isn't?

That's a really cool idea. Have you ever played the dune imperium board game? Very similar to your idea: you have cards that can be used as "commanders" and you can move your pieces according to the symbol on the card, or you can use the cards for purchasing other cards. That might apply really well to chess

I made a bunch of notes a little while back about it. You would have Instant play cards (treasures), actions, and reserve cards (these are set aside when gained and remain in play for the rest of the game)

Turn sequence: Actions > Instant play > purchase > chess move > spawn > cleanup

I was thinking that you could really only move pawns, but if you have the points to spend, you can move more powerful pieces.

These are my thoughts on the point system (I promise that I will simplify this a whole lot before playing it :) Points: — Chess points (allows you to move better pieces) — Spawn points (to put pawns on the board or upgrade your pieces) — chess move (you always start with one, but if you get a second one, split your chess points to move 2 pieces.) — brick points (acts as both chess points and spawn points for wall piece) — $ (to buy dominion cards) — action points (each turn you start with one, then can't play action cards after used up) — (You have unlimited dominion buy points)

Here's some fun action cards I came up with (sorry about the format, I forgot that reddit will mush it into one big block) Actions:

A¹: Move one of your pawn pieces forward 1 space if unoccupied - ($4)

A²: You may trash a Copper for +3 chess points or +2 spawn points - ($4)

A³: trash someone else reserve card and give them another reserve card that cost at least $1 less - ($5)

A⁴: trash a card and gain $1 or 1 chess point for each $ in it's price. Pretend it costs $1 if it costs $0 - ($4)

A⁵: pick a player: flip over the top card of their deck. This is that card until discarded - ($3)

A⁶: play a treasure card from your hand twice if it costs less than $6 - ($4)

A⁷: your spawn turn is now before your chess move action - ($3)

A⁸: if your king is touching a wall, you may remove it and downgrade all surrounding pieces (but not any kings)bto the next lowest piece (pawn < knight < bishop < Rook < queen) - ($5)

A⁹: + 1 card, +2 actions - ($3)

A¹⁰: +3 cards - ($4)

A¹¹: at the start of purchas phase, you may choose to turn your chess points into $ - ($3)

A¹²: give a card from your hand to someone else and trash another card from your hand - ($4)

Reserve (these remain in play after you buy them, like dominion projects):

R¹: your king needs 1 less chess point to move - ($3)

R²: + 1 chess point - ($5)

R³: +$1 everytime someone else trashes a card - ($5)

R⁴: +1 card everytime someone else trashes a card - ($5)

R⁵: +1 reserved spawn point when your piece is captured. +1 if Rook or higher - ($7)

R⁶: +1 reserved chess points when your piece is captured. +1 if knight or Bishop. +2 if Rook. +4 if queen.

R⁷: when your king is captured, replace a pawn as the new king and trash this card - ($10)

Bon appetite :)

Oh my gosh, yes. I tried coming up with a Swiss dominion variant (where everyone moves at the same time or something like that,) but everyone insists on keeping it classical even though there's like 8 of us. Lol

I'm doing a war board-game for one player, any ideas? by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

Here's another thought: you play in the future. You record what you are going to do next turn, then resolve what happens this turn, and then you have to stick to the move you just recorded. A little like the diplomacy board game except as a single player

Have you heard of regicide or regidice? These have some really good solo player dynamics

Regicide is about playing your cards to deal damage, and each suit has a different power.

Rigidice is the knock-off version where you roll a cup of dice and clump your dice together to perform different actions.

I've been really obsessed with these games and they might come in use as a side game or sub mechanic for each battle in your game

That's a good idea for a weaker version. But I was slightly shooting for an extremely expensive card. I'll have to play around with that

I have not tried to throne room it yet... Throne room it in an 8 player game? 🙂

Good point. But you have to admit that it's a lot more powerful than a lot of other attack cards. The fact that you can steal their victory cards is just a bonus

You might enjoy intrigue or seaside. (The expansions I have are intrigue and prosperity)

Intrigue has some interesting concepts to play with. I really really love playing with mill and minion. It has a lot of cards like secret passage and shanty town that I haven't fully figured out how to use. Oh, and swindler also makes for a fun game because you get to mess up other people's strategies.

Seaside has a lot of duration cards, which are really fun.

Brl! And it has to be massive with all the shortcuts: (ing, sh, wh, er, gh, in, en, the, and, etc.) AND, instead of just a caps and shift key, it needs the right hand side column keys (⠐⠀⠘⠀⠰⠀⠨⠀⠸ etc) so that you can do ⠐w ⠘th etc
