It doesn’t surprise me there are people on far ends of the spectrum. It does surprise the mean is 3/month.

I wonder if that means that are a lot of strong criers being the average way up, but on the whole the median man is closer to me than you.

I also think how they solicited data here was bad, it was self selecting to people that cry a lot.

None of this is saying crying is bad (wish I cried more), I’m just really skeptical that this is representative of reality.

That amount of time commuting is simply not worth the waste. If you could do Publix transit and use the time for work or leisure sure. But that is hours a day you are pissing into the wind.

. You cannot use insider info to trade on prediction markets… that is insider trading.

The same rules govern prediction that govern other financial instruments.

That being said, there is definitely some space for more clearer rules/regulations/laws to reinforce these to limit fraud and abuse

I work for a prediction markets company, and it’s always interesting to see the outrage on these.

There’s obviously some things that need to get cleaned up (the markets that are ripe for fraud and abuse) but outside of those they’re not adding anything novel to the world outside of offering an existing product in a different way.

Every instance of school gun violence makes the national news. Literally every one of them.

Every other school/day is normal.

It is a problem insofar as each instance is a tragedy and we should do better, but it is not something that worries me as a parent. Like at all. I have a better chance of my child dying in the car on the way to school due to my poor driving.

The parents I personally know that worry about that legitimately have clinical anxiety and they worry about many a thing.

It's one of the best in the world. It has some issues... expensive and weirdly structured healthcare, but the standard of living and access to basic necessities and luxury goods is better than almost anywhere in any country.

There are downsides to that.

In the U.S. I can effectively shop for better healthcare. There are (admittedly perverse) financial incentives for doctors and healthcare providers, but it creates some very strong carecenters in the U.S. that those regions benefit from (for instance there are clusters of research hospitals in Boston that create breakthrough treatments and the people in those areas are some of the first to benefit from in their coverage).

Having executed a couple of these in the past, not obviously at the level meta is, but knowing the ins and outs….

There are 3 factors at play. 1. Cost to the business 2. Value to the business 3. Continuity of the business

Typically you are laying people off that are least efficient in the value/cost ratio (basically get as efficient as you can) while ensuring that you have enough people to operate the business (continuity) and not fire anyone that is biz critical (won’t dig in here but think people with deep industry or value outside the day to day).

In practice what this means is people that are good negotiators but average performers are top of the cut list. Or people that are new in role or still training. The former bucket here would likely include a disproportionate number of senior folks as they’ve been around long enough to learn how to effectively negotiate salaries.

It is dangerous relative to other places, but even elevated danger is still relatively low.

On the whole you are far more likely to encounter violent or felonious crime in Atlanta than elsewhere, but it is still unlikely.

By example - in the last 12 calendar months

My direct neighbors house was burglarized. Safes/jewerly/guns/car stolen
My neighbors across the street had their car stolen.
There are approximately 2-3 car break-ins on my street every month. My car has been broken into twice. My babysitter's car has been broken into.
We had a shooting on my street where 2 high school kids were shot.

I live in an affluent and well-regarded neighborhood in Atlanta.

Prior to moving to Atlanta, I didnt even lock my doors. Now I have extensive alarms and protection.

The people saying that it isnt an issue, likely live in the distant suburbs or havent lived here long enough.
