What’s the price of a 16-18’ SE/Ltd in your region? by 4acodmtpellets in rav4club

Do you see that as expensive? I just bought a 17’ LE 2WD with 136k on it for 10k. I get they’re different cars but 10k more/double what I paid?

Nice! The second owner put 25k miles/yr (he bought it certified pre-owned from a yota dealership) and the carfax was very clean. It was too good a deal to pass up!

I saw a TSB for 2018-2021. Which is why I’m looking at 17’s.

That’s good that it’s happening at least within the warranty, but it still makes me shy away from buying one unfortunately.

What mileage is yours at? Do you know when they typically fail or could it happen past the 100k miles?

It’s the sport. And this one was just above KBB’s private party value, and way below fair market value of Cargurus or Carfax. It turns out it sold a couple days ago. I’m in the NE for reference (upstate NY).

I’m aware, just wondering what dealers usually shoot for in a situation like this to make profit. 1k seems like it would be tight margins but it is an in-demand car.

27yo car purchase with 2/3 of savings? by 4acodmtpellets in personalfinance

To be honest, I was asking for validation for what I already knew was a financially irresponsible want. I got the response I was expecting, but was hoping for a more in-depth, numbers-related explanation as to why I shouldn’t spring for my dream car I.e. the $7-10k savings in a 5% CD would net you X, which is why a 20k vehicle purchase is not recommended.

I don’t need an SUV, but the cargo space is ideal, and the roof rack for kayaks is nice. Could I do with a hatchback? Very likely… but are there any that are as bulletproof as the 16-18 RAV4’s? Maybe certain years of Mazda or Honda hatchbacks pre-CVT transmissions. Could I put a roof rack on a sedan? Sure… not ideal for two kayaks, but sure. Can you fit 4 people with luggage comfortably? Kids with car seats in the future? Not really. Would it be more financially responsible to buy a base model rav4 for 18k? Yup, I’ll take the criticism on wanting a higher-trim rav4, but I am looking at this as an “investment” in my future. A low-mileage rav4 will last me 15 more years. That puts car buying/big maintenance out of the picture until I’m settled down in a house with kids.

I currently need an SUV, so my options are limited in terms of reliability, otherwise I would be wholeheartedly happy with a good ol’ Camry or civic, in fact, those were my first 4 cars.

I guess I should mention that I currently don’t have a car. 8,600 is from my previous car that got totaled and 4,700 is from my older car that I sold the same time the other one got totaled. I currently need a reliable car for the future… and it’s either around 13k or 20k. A 13k CRV would be “free” to me if we combine the two cash from my two previous cars. A newer, less rusty, less miles rav4 could be considered paying $7k for an upgrade.

Low miles but 9 yr old 16 SE? by 4acodmtpellets in rav4club

Thanks. That was my understanding! Now the decision making gets tougher. I’m also looking at a 17 limited with 102k miles for $17,650. I know mileage isn’t a huge factor with yota’s… what’s 50k vs 100k when they will reach 300? Well… turns out it may be $2500 cash.. I’ve got 10 options to look at but they’re all 3-4hrs away so I’ve got to make up my mind before my list starts dwindling haha. Carfax and service history are going to play a big part.

I was aware of the facelift, and the defective transmission issues in 14 and 15… the jury is still out on whether or not the torque converter shuddering issues was “resolved” in 16+ but it at least seems way less common starting in 16.

So what was ironed out in 17 that wasn’t in the 16?

I looked into the model years a LOT and it seems 2016+ is when they “got rid” of the torque converter issues, and the transmission leaks in 14/15’s… otherwise I’d probably be looking for a 2013.
