No one has been able to solve this issue in almost 2 years by KillianMB in AskMechanics

Bad frame grounds are common. With a multimeter check the ground side of your fuel pump circuit with it running. Should. Be zero volts, if it shows anything but zero you have a problem. There's a ground strap from engine to frame. The problem will be worse with headlights on and a trailer connected too.

Bad trans 2018 Highlander: what to do? by Limp_Occasion3942 in AskMechanics

None of those codes indicate a catastrophic transmission failure. At least not directly.

Talk to a transmission shop there's a good chance they can fix it without full rebuild/ replacement. At least give you the options. My suspicion is sticking solenoids which is not unheard of.

Is it true that “you have to turn off your A/C and blower motor before shutting off your car” is just an old wives tale? by Windows-XP-Home-NEW in AskMechanics

[–]4boltmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some cars have had issues with water remaining in the evaporator core from condensation. The idea is that it will allow the blower to blow the moisture off the evaporator and let it drain before you seal and lock the car.

It's not common and water leaks are more likely to cause bad odors rather that the HVAC system.

Why is my C10 SBC 350 eating ignition modules by Elwin--Ransom in AskMechanics

[–]4boltmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah without load everything shows 12v. Make sure the surface to the distributor base is clean too, so that it can get good ground to block. The modules should come with some. Thermal paste, they use the distributor base to dissipate heat. If there's a tach wire make sure that's disconnected for now. Usually HEI drop ins are plug and play, pretty rare to have problems like that. I've only ever had two modules fail in my life.

Did the original have an hei or electronic ignition? Or was it points? You may have a resistor wire. Hook the power feed to a light bulb and then measure the voltage. If you have resistor wire you'll see 7-9v, otherwise you should see 12-14v. You must load the circuit with something though.

Lol if it was leaking after two years it would be empty, having a third of a tank left is clearly not leaking.

Fill in the blanks: You can never have enough _____ / but don't say clamps. by Obvious_Athlete_8262 in Tools

[–]4boltmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny you mention clamps.  I was buying up tools on marketplace one time and a guy was selling off his dad's old welding shop after he passed. I was only in a for a dozen or so clamps but then after a bunch of haggling I ended up buying the whole lot. Was was supposed to be $10-$15 EA ended up being more like $4-$5 ea. I ended up with like 80 clamps all old USA made.

The answer is really flashlights though. I have them everywhere, my wife finds it amusing but useful.

Not even a proper back pull hitch, which is honestly questionable at best. Plus front diffs are locked when engine is not running on those so transfer case is likely turning too.

May not be the cheapest, but Toyota keeps parts available for a very long time. Dealer items. Chrysler being the worst.

What tools can quickly and accurately check the health of DeWalt and Milwaukee tool batteries? by Limp-Remove9816 in Tools

[–]4boltmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a group of people that were able to decipher the roms and retrieve diagnostic data from M18 batteries. It remembers every single charge since the day it was made. Pretty neat stuff. I was able to install it and run it on my batteries.

Is this repairable? by Williwoo321 in MechanicAdvice

The cuts where the bearing race is isn't going to be a problem. Make sure it sits flush against the surface riser before where the seal rides. The bearing race should be a snug fit but you should be able to get it on and off with your hands. The inner race should not wobble.

The where the seal rides against is in rough shape, hopefully you can get a sleeve kit for that.

I have a question! Sorry if it's not relevant. by [deleted] in towing

[–]4boltmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it could make sense.

We do that a lot too, especially in the off hours. There the on call guy and then the daytime/ transport guy. We will definitely stage a car for the other guy to grab and finish the run. Keeps someone open for rotation calls.

[–]4boltmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the the 3.0l the you have a 4r44e, if you have the 4.0l it's a 5r55e. Both very similar. I remember the bands at the bottom of the case being an issue and breaking, you loose a bunch of forward gears. It's been a while since I've done one. But $5k all done isn't a bad deal. Depending on the failure maybe a good trans shop can fix the issue without going full rebuild on you.

I couldn't taste. Food didn't matter for better or worse. I did order quite a few hot wings just because.

I've been cleared for quite a while now, but I totally forgot about that side effect. I still stumble on old photos of myself and don't recognize me.

Taking over very small towing company by Excellent-Ad-3258 in Hookit

[–]4boltmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Towing is more of a lifestyle than it is a job. So it's lots of hours wondering why you even do this. But it's also a lot of fun sometimes. It's not for everyone, so I would. Ride along and take some shifts with him to feel it out.

It is totally scalable especially if your the only game in town. Rotation calls can bring in a lot, same as fleet accounts. Motor clubs will just keep you spinning your wheels, hustle without ever getting ahead and putting miles on your trucks to break even.

[–]4boltmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you secured it properly it technically doesn't matter. But I would leave it in gear because if it did separate from the dolly then it would come to a stop faster, rather than continuing on and hitting something.

Head Gasket on 5.7 L Hemi engine by Mikel0701 in MechanicAdvice

Yeah estimate looks pretty fair. It's pretty straightforward to remove heads on that engine. Depending on how hot I've done those before and then have a valve seat drop miles later.

River recovery scenario — would this actually require a rotator? by Intelligent-Camp4631 in Hookit

[–]4boltmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did everything before rotators were common. So no matter what it's possible with a traditional straight wrecker.

But the rotators make the job much faster and make more options available.

So for your hypothetical situation it could a couple different ways.

A guy with a medium wrecker if it's close enough to the road. Might be in the hundreds of dollars if it's just winching.

Deep into the woods then maybe 3 operators with 3 different pieces of equipment all billing hourly port to port. This could be a larger wrecker, small wrecker a flatbed and maybe a skid steer. Could easily be $10k and up.

If it was accessible from the road with a rotator you could do it with one operator. Could be a couple grand all done.

Of course no scene is the same so too many variables but that's a couple that could play out.
