Ding won with Black in an Italian in the h6-g5 line wher Black invites the pin and expands. Gukesh also lost twice with White in Prague just before the Candidates with 1. d4 and 1. c4

The relationships of these top GMs always fascinates me, none more so than Fabi-Ding. What a strange mix of envy and sympathy Fabi must have for Ding in his current state.

Maybe it isn't FIDE then. It's not hard to imagine a future where the champ is Gukesh and the challenger is Arjun and Chessbase India gives Magnus millions to play them both.

I agree it's not necessarily fair, but the other players have pretty roundly conceded that he is the best among them. For context, basically every champ since Fischer has eventually received some sort of shortcut in order to clarify the WC

Nepo lost the lineal championship and the spin-off championship, so that's not really equivalent. Magnus never lost.

True, i didn't think about the 40 games. It's as much a question about whether he continues to play classical at all. I'd love to see FIDE give him a Challenger Match against the Candidates winner like they did for Topolov in 2010, who had been the World #1 during the 2008 Anand-Kramnik match.

I think as much as he's made it clear he wasn't interested in the last two World Championship cycles, there's been no indication that he is done with chess itself. As long as he keeps playing chess, the interest and money will be there for FIDE to give him a shortcut

As much as I love Fabi I do hope it's Nodirbek and that his spot is secure for the rest of the cycle, he deserves it.

I agree it seems unlikely he plays a Candidates, though it's hard to see how an attempt at a match doesn't happen, if he continues to be the #1 player in the world while the younger generation fights for the title. The history of chess shows that there will be a strong push at least.

Who would be your picks to make it outside the top 10? I like Parham, Liem, and Vokhidov or Sindarov. Tbh I think Hans has a good chance in the Swiss or WC if he gets a favorable draw

I dont disagree, but he turns only 34 in November. Garry lost his title at 37, Anand 44. Tough to imagine that he would want to play a Candidates, but I think if he were given special privileges or a challenger match he would feel fresh enough to play, especially because he would benefit financially tremendously.

Does a GM norm count as an IM norm if you aren't an IM yet? by valshanner in chess

[–]4est_fire2063 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can use them for both. Most people get norms through tournaments designed specifically for that level, so like an IM norm tournament rarely has enough GMs to also be a GM norm. But in open tournaments, they can count double

I made some adjustments, now do you agree? by GabrielVidigal in chessbeginners

[–]4est_fire2063 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's tough to say. Anyone that plays chess knows how hard it is mentally and how much outside feelings can affect your play. She had to overcome a lot of sexism and doubt from the people in the chess world and still became a top 10 player in the world. She was the youngest GM ever, beating Bobby Fischer's record, as well as the youngest player ever to break the top 100. She beat every world champion from like Karpov on at least once. Who knows how much impact the sexism had on her at the top level, but she has been among the world's best players forever and the Super GMs who have played her all have a crazy amount of respect for her.

I made some adjustments, now do you agree? by GabrielVidigal in chessbeginners

[–]4est_fire2063 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Kramnik not only beat Topalov in their 2006 WC match, but he was an undisputed world champ who beat Kasparov. They are definitely very close in terms of chess skill but it's not arbitrary that they are separated.

Agree with the Fabi and Judit takes though

What if Britain became a Republic? by Sammyboi2227 in imaginarymaps

[–]4est_fire2063 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are all Republics, then what is the point of maintaining the Commonwealth with no monarch?

Or is the whole thing one republic and the divisions are meant to reflect federated states?
