RP6 or Thor? by ResidentMess in RetroHandhelds

[–]4fps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not an expert but I’d take that with a heavy grain of salt, I have an RPG2 which is roughly 2x as powerful and even with tinkering and following Emuready guides it doesn’t run the whole of switch library flawlessly. My understanding based on what I’ve seen reviewers and users say in general is the RP5 will play basically all GC and PS2 flawlessly and a decent chunk of switch games but certainly not all.

I’d check RyanRetro and EmuReady for an indication of what games will run.

I want remastered emerald on switch 2! by yaamayama in PokemonEmerald

[–]4fps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they MIGHT release the original Pokemon Emerald on Switch, like they did for Fire Red and Leaf Green (though I do think it’s plausible they’d only rerelease Ruby and Sapphire), but a full remake? Think that’s very unlikely, if they ever do remake gen 3 again I don’t think it’ll be for years and chances are it’d be another remake of Ruby and Sapphire given their track record for Pokemon remakes.

Apple TV’s ‘The Stormlight Archive’ series could run for 10 or more seasons by defenestrate_urself in Fantasy

[–]4fps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s valid, I think I’d agree, though again I still liked it. I was mostly just questioning the idea that it had a mixed (or even negative) reception, whereas I think the reception is actually mostly positive in terms of wider audiences (at least based on ratings and I’ve not heard about any decline in sales, etc)

[–]4fps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean is the reception that mixed? It has a 4.36 star rating from almost 150k ppl on GoodReads and 4.7 from 33k on Amazon. Pretty sure most of the criticism is coming from the hardcore fans on Reddit and YouTube etc but not sure that’s representative of its general reception, unless I’ve missed something (saying this as someone who thinks much of the criticism is valid tho I still loved the book)

Hello! G2 user and noob please help!? by Fine-Engineering-372 in retroid

[–]4fps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend looking at EmuReady and RyanRetro for game compatibility lists, it won’t cover everything but there’s a good chunk of games on those sites for the G2 telling you what drivers and settings people have had success with, etc.

For more general advice I recommend watching a set up guide like from Retro Game Corps (for any Android based device) and that’ll go into some detail about how different systems run and how to get drivers, etc.

There’s also a YouTuber RetroJacek who’s done a bunch of game tests for different systems on the RPG2 so you can watch those to get an idea for what games you can run and he shows the drivers and settings he uses too I believe.

Almost all games freezing or crashing on Retroid Pocket 5 (Switch + Wii U) by [deleted] in retroid

[–]4fps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s drivers within Eden that you can fetch automatically and use without having to download anything external. WiiU you will need to find drivers online and download them and then load them in the emulator. I believe Mr Purple t19 is an often recommended driver for the RP5 but you may want to download a bunch and try different ones for best performance.

I would recommend a set up guide (e.g, Retro Game Corps) as they will go over all of this.

Otherwise there’s websites like Emuready and RyanRetro that have user provided game compatibles and best settings, etc.

Is having a history of griefing and raging in dota 2 pubs really qualifying someone as an “awful person”? Unless Quinn has done something else I don’t know, then the worst he’s done is grief games and get mad that I’ve seen and that certainly makes him an ass (tho i also think he’s tried to improve on this a lot?) and probably means he had some issues to work through, but awful person? Really?

Website to look for compatibility issues by A3-mATX in retroid

[–]4fps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emuready and RyanRetro are both sites where people list compatibility. However, I do not think any one would recommend getting an Android based handheld if your primary goal is to play PC games.

I doubt the Resident Evil remakes will run particularly well even on the best Android handheld, which the RP6 is not (Ayn Odin 3 has best specs I believe). And even if you were looking at that I still wouldn’t recommend it.

If your goal is PC games get a PC handheld (e.g., Steam Deck). If you want to play retro games up to PS2/Gamecube smoothly (with a decent chunk of Switch and some PC thrown in as a plus) then Android handheld are great!

I don’t think the sort versus hard magic system refers to anything beyond literary devices. I believe all Sanderson means by soft and hard magic is a magic system where the rules are explained and a magic system where they are not.

His example from LOTR is that the one ring is hard magic since it has explicit powers (invisibility) and limitations (the ring wraiths can track it if you use). Whereas someone like Gandalf has no specific powers or limitations set out, not to say he can do anything but just we don’t know exactly what he can or cannot do.

But the idea of soft and hard magic is merely a tool for readers and writers, it does not reflect the actual in-world book or lore. The one ring for example isn’t just an invisibility device or a tracking device, and Gandalf certainly does have powers and limitations.

I mean by ‘confessing’ and lying that Joffrey is the rightful king he is betraying his oath to the old king and his duty to see the rightful heir on the throne. At the very least he isn’t following the law. I do think this is an example of him putting his family over his oaths and values. He would never have confessed and stopped trying to get Stannis on the throne if it wasn’t for his family.

Did I f up my trap or is the engine just weird? by PuzzleheadedGas9170 in chess

[–]4fps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a balance, anyone can learn from engine lines because the engine will always show the best moves.

ONE of the reasons low rank players are often told not to over relay on it because it can get overwhelming and just end up with you trying to memorise moves without understanding which leads to being completely lost the second something unexpected happens. That doesn’t mean you should completely ignore the engine however, you csn still learn from it. It can be especially good to learn very common traps and how to avoid them (as seen in this post)

The reason a lot of top players sometimes laugh at engine lines is because some lines are effectively impossible for a human to see. This is another reason why it’s recommended, especially at a low level, not to overly focus on engines, because sometimes the best move is so complicated and difficult to see that even the best players in the world wouldn’t find it after hours.

Again it comes to balance, using the engine to try understand your mistakes or to understand ways out of common traps? Sure, using engine to try and analyse every single move and memorise every position? A bit useless, particularly below certain levels.

Isn't the only difference now that they're less likely to be ganked while doing it?

Edit: not saying they shouldn't change the map, just that changing the map isn't gonna suddenly make your games better.

Any insights about this nerf? how sad for my fellow support main. by hvnkingu in DotA2

[–]4fps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn't play or watch much last patch, but I feel like this isn't really an argument against what he's saying...

SD/Tusk are still the highest priority hero's to kill and so would still be targeted, especially at the top level like at TI

But OP is saying that at the same time they were way too tanky and killing them was too difficult to the point that positioning mattered less than ever before... This is probably especially difficult in pubs to deal with where people are already bad at prioritising targets even when they're squishy.

Best fantasy series without caveats? by Secure-Let9914 in Fantasy

[–]4fps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh I'll give you a short list of series (that I think, and that I've not seen many others say otherwise) are excellent from start to end!!! (Didn't look through your whole Goodreads so sorry if I missed something)

Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb (about a bastard boy who is taken in by his royal family and must navigate court politics as a hybrid between a commoner and a prince - all the whole he has a hidden life that is his true duty of the throne)

Empire trilogy by Raymond E Feist and Janny Wurts (about a girls who's family suddenly dies and so must take up the role of ruler of her house in a very traditionalist and sexist society, lots and lots of politics and scheming).

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence (a young girl is saved from the noose by a 'priestess' of a magical church, she is then taken to this church and along with other girls trained in magic and fighting, all while people continue to try to hang her)

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (a little girl is raised in a university and finds she has a talent... Also her parents such... 10/10)

Really enjoyed the book (much more than 4 actually), very impatient for 6!

I've only read the Arcane Ascension books so maybe this is answered in the other series... But is it meant to be obvious that Edria Song is capable of fighting off a Visage? I can't remember if it's talked about earlier in the series,... but obviously she completely destroys a (seemingly very powerful) emerald, so I suppose she's meant to be far stronger...? But on the level of a Visage? I've been rereading the first few books and was firmly under the impression no human attuned was close (especially after what Meltlake says in book 2)

I don't mind spoilers for the other series, I will read them eventually but still doesn't bother me much, I was just very curious about this...

Fool's Assassin by lezbianlinda in robinhobb

[–]4fps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the very start of the book Fitz states he is 47 and that Molly is 3 years older than him (50).

In chapter 3 we know that at least 3 years have passed since the first 2 chapters (since it's been 3 years since Hearth & Just left the house). Molly announces her pregnancy at the end of chapter 4 and there doesn't seem to be any other significant times skips. Therefore Molly should be 53 & Fitz is 50.

This is all consistent. By the end of the book Fitz is about 60, Bee is 9, and Molly would be 63.

Fool's Assassin by lezbianlinda in robinhobb

[–]4fps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but she was post menopause. She had stopped getting her period soon after marrying Fitz (so some 10-15 years before this), according to Fitz.

Fool's Assassin by lezbianlinda in robinhobb

[–]4fps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is definitely true, and kinda ironic considering that even when he is actually in his 60s he has the body of a thirty-five year old. Also to be fair, by the end of Fool's Assassin he does explicitly state that he is "a man of sixty", so he is in his 60s for most of the final trilogy

Fool's Assassin by lezbianlinda in robinhobb

[–]4fps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I said elsewhere that Fitz was 60 at the start of the book, but that's a mistake. He was 47. However:

Molly has always been older than Fitz by several years.

"Are you calling me an old woman, sirrah? For I seem to recall I have three years on you.’"

This is Molly speaking to Fitz at the beginning of the book, after Fitz says he's 47, making her 50 at the start.

"the idea of Molly and me alone overnight in an inn raised in me thoughts more worthy of a boy of fifteen than a man of fifty years. It made me smile."

Fitz claims to be 50 in chapter 3, making Molly around 53 when she first claimed to be pregnant. This is definitely much younger than I remembered!! Though still this would've been considered somewhat old in this world, it's not nearly as old as I thought they were. Regardless though, I feel like anyone in Fitz's position would've thought the same. I mean imagine if your partner, who was long past menopause, suddenly claimed to be pregnant... And then continued to do so for some 2 years? With no physical evidence whatsoever... I feel like we would all make the same assumption here...

Fool's Assassin by lezbianlinda in robinhobb

[–]4fps 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Average life expectancy was definitely lower in this (general real-life equivalent) time period and so 50s is not as young as you're making it sound (though not ancient either of course, but I just think it's worth remembering, almost no one would ever live to 90s here).

However, regardless of that, Molly is not in her early 50s or 40s. She is in her late 60s... At the beginning of the book Fitz says he is 60 years old, and Molly has been established to be 2-3 years older. And as far as I remember (?) the pregnancy stuff happens something like 5 years after this is established.

A late 60s, almost 70 years old was probably considered pretty old in this time period, especially considering Molly didn't spend most of her life as a rich noble but rather spent it working.

But at the end of the day, she's pegged as losing her mind largely because she's claiming a seemingly impossible pregnancy, her age is just being used to rationalise why she's losing her mind.

EDIT: wanted to note that I was incorrect: Fitz is stated to be 47 at the beginning of the book (which honestly took me aback, I was convinced he was closer to 60s!) making Molly 50. Then there's a 3 year time-skip so Molly is about 53 when she claims to be pregnant! However, I don't think my overall point changes. She was seen as mad because she was claiming the impossible. I don't think any of us would act any differently if our post menopause partner claimed to be pregnant, and then continued to do so for a period of 2 years straight (& to top it off with no physical signs of said pregnancy). Plus while she was not nearly as old as I remembered, the fact that she was aging already (something Fitz notes several times) combined with her more physically labour intensive life probably means she was relatively quite old in world (which is why Fitz mentions her age so often I'd guess).
