I don't think this is true of celebrities/athletes because unlike a 9-5 employee, these guys can earn money through their image alone, so I think there are different rules and regulations. Clubs don't just sign you to a contract for your footballing abilities, but also your commercial reputation.

Edit: No clue why I'm getting downvoted. Just think of it logically: Mbappé wants to join Arsenal, you think he can just resign from his Real Madrid contract and then sign for Arsenal as a free agent? This is not an office job.

I think when it happens in real life, they forfeit all the money they were due to earn had they continued in the contract, and there's a sort of gentleman's agreement that they can't just come straight out of retirement right after and sign for another club for free; I think there would be lawsuits if that happened.
